December 13th, 1955. <br /> <br />owing upon the land purchased by the City amount,S to. $47.04. The Belt Line has paid all the taxes owing by it on <br />the land, ~u~ th~ City Collector should be relieved from the collect~o~ of the amount of Taxes due by the City. <br /> I therefore recommend that taxes in the sum of $47.04 assessed against the <br />Norfolk and Portsmouth Belt L.ine Railroad Co~mpany fgr the yea~ 1955 be relieved." <br /> Motion of Mr. Hawks to concur in the recommendation of the City Attorney was <br /> <br />adopted. <br /> <br /> 55-325 - The following letters .from, the Co~m~issioner of Revenue were read: <br /> <br /> "Please ,be adviSed that John Robert Wise has been assessed for tangible personal <br />prop~.r~y (automobile) valued ~t $1170~00 with taxes amounting to $32,.15. Ou~ investigation reveals that <br />was not residing in p~r~tsmouth City on January 1, 1955 and therefore was not subject to the ta~. <br /> Mr. Wise has paid this .tax as evidenced by his receipted tax bill No. 24443. As thi <br /> is definitely au erroneous assessment, we sincerely request that a refU3ad in the s~aount of $32,18~e made to Mr. <br /> Wise. <br /> <br /> "Ple sSs ~e advised that Ira Clyde Eariy has been asSessed for tangible personal <br /> property val~ed at $880.00 with taxes amounting to $24.20. Our investigation reveals that the correct assessment <br /> should h~ave been $390.00 with ta~es amounting to $10:72~ repr~es~i~ an over-assessment in taxes ameunting to <br /> $13.48. Mr. Early has paid t~e original tax of $24.20 as evidenced by his ~eCeipted tax bill #~519. As this is <br /> definitely an overpayment of $1S.4~we sincerely request that a refund in the amount of $13.48 be made to Mr. <br /> Early." <br /> "Please be advised that Charles E. F~iles~ Jr. has been assessed for tangible <br /> persona, property ~v~lued at $1300.O0 with taxes amounting to $S5,75. Our investigation reveals that the correct <br /> assessmen~ should ha~e been $690~00 with taxes s~)unting to $18.98~ repreSenting an overTassessment in taxes <br /> emou~ating to $16.77. ~r. Foiles has paid the original tax of $35.75 as evidenced by his receipted tax bill #626?, <br /> As this is definitely an overpayment of $16.~we sincere~ly request that a refund in the amount of $16.77 be <br /> made to ~r. Early." <br /> <br /> "Please be advised that ~ary I~ West was assessed for tangible personal property <br /> valued at $8?0.00 with t~x~s amounting to $23.9~3o The assessment in. 9uestiem pertains to an automobile. Our in- <br /> vestigation shows that car was not ow~aed by her on J~uary l~ 1955. The taxpayer has paid the above tax as sllowl <br /> by her receipted tax hill #169,01 ~ as this is definitely an erroneous assessment, we sincerely request that a <br /> refund in the amount of SZS.93~e made to the taxpayer." <br /> ~ "Please be a~vised that W. E. Jones has been assessed for tangible personal proper~y <br /> valued at $5~0.00 with taxes amounting to $15.68. Our investigatio/~ reveals that the correct assessment should <br /> have been $350.00 with taxes amounting to $9.S3~ representing an over-asSessment in taxes of <br /> Mr. Jones has paid the original tax of $15.68 as evidenced by his ~eceipted tax <br /> bill No. 8413. As this is definitely an overpayment~of~ $6.0~we sincerely request that a refund in the amount <br /> of $6.05 be mad e to ~Lr. Jones." <br /> <br /> Motion. of ~fr ttoward that refunds be granted~ wa~ adopted. <br /> <br /> 55-326 - The following letter f~om the S~p~rintendent of Schools was read: <br /> <br /> "I ~m hereby requesting that ~he City Sc]~oel Board of the City of L~ortsmouth be <br /> granted permission to include that land now owned by the City adjacent to th~ TruxT~n School in the site plans <br /> be presented to the State Department of Education for the addition to the Ti~lxton School. A~ :yem know~ part of the <br /> o <br /> land is now u~sed for recreation~ and could eent~n~e Eo be used for,,such, as the ~c]lool needs and recreation <br /> needs will in no way conflict with each other. <br /> The present school site and land requested for ~he school is designated by a red <br /> li~e on the atSached map." <br /> <br /> Moti~ of Nit.
