By sction of the City Council of Portsmouth in 195~ the compension of the Clerks was fixed at $9,000.00 per annum. Since that time, conditions throughont this country have greatly changed, the cost of living increased, salaries have. been raised,, the costs of labor and ma- terials elevated,, and some fee~ increased. Recognizing these conditions, the Virginia Legislature of 1956 increased the salary Brackets of the Clerk of the Court for the City of Newport News from $10,000.00 ro $12,000.00 (Acts 1956'Chapter 191), increased the Clerk's compen- sation in cities and counties with populations between 25,000 and 50,000 ~wenty- five per cen~ (25%) and Section 14-15§.11 (Acts 1956, C.403) Provides that 'the maximnm compensation authorized for the Clerks of the Cou~ t of record is increased by twenty per cenzum' ~o he paid from the fees collected (applies only to clerks on the fee system). The City o£ Portsmouth has recognized the conditions and has classified and raised the pay of the city employees.
