October 22nd, 1957. <br /> <br /> 57-382 - "I am submitting a contract between the Appomatix River Committee composed <br />~ Representatives of the cities of Portsmouth, Norfolk, Newport News, Petersburg and the town of Colonial Beach <br /> and Chester~ield County-and the Engineering Firm of Wiley and Wilson of Lynchburg and recommend that the City <br /> Manager be authorized and directed ro execute the same for and on behalf of the City and ~hat the City Clerk ar- <br /> test the same and affix the City seal thereto." <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Kirby that the proper city officials be authorized ~o sign contract <br />after having been approved by the City Attorney, was adopted. <br /> <br />- N~ BUS INESS <br /> <br />57-383 - The following letter from the Commissioner of Revenue was read: <br /> <br /> "Please he advised that Inez 0 Jewell was doubly assessed for tangible personal pro- <br />perty in 1957 valued ar $160.00 with taxes amounting ro $4.40. <br /> The taxpayer has paid the original tax bill plus the correct bill as shown by his <br />receipted tax notice ~7935. As this is definitely an erroneous assessment, we sincerely request that a refund in <br />the amount of $4.40 be made to the taxpayer." <br /> <br />Motion of ~Lr. Kirby that refund be granted was adopted. <br /> <br /> 57-384 - The following letter from the Tidewater ~irginia Development Council was <br />read: <br /> "I wish ro acknowledge and, through you, thank the City of Portsmouth for your <br />sustaining contribution of $12,005.85 toward the 1957 operating funds of the T&dewater Virginia Development <br />Council. <br /> It is with pleasure that we report that the Council started in its initial stages of <br />full operation on July 1st. As of that date we undertook a nation~.wide advertising effort. We have recruited and <br />employed most of our required staff, and are now adequately housed in Our permanent quarters. <br /> we are confident and thoroughly convinced that the area which our organization .re preI- <br />serifs possesses immeasurable potential for industrial development. With the Council maintained on an adequate fi - <br />nancial basis and in full operation over a planned, sustained period, we believe the efforts will bring about re- <br />sults highly beneficial ro our area and ro those who have participated in them. <br /> the sustaining financial coarribution of the City of Portsmouth is deeply appreciated <br />and the evidence of its support is most heartening in our mutual endeavor to place and keep our Tidewater area <br />competition for new business and industry." <br /> <br /> On motion filed. <br /> <br /> On motion adjourned. <br /> <br />Approved - ~/ <br /> President. <br /> <br /> <br />
