League, being ever mindful pf the inherently arduous and <br />often danger-£illed duties of ~our Fire and Police Departments, wishes to join with ail civic-minded persons <br />and organizations in urging favorable consideration of pay increases for these two.[departments. While not <br />unmindful of the need for continued economy in all departments of the ~ity, the League is of the opinion thai <br />the individuals collectively charged with keeping our community safe and our homes secure, are entitled to <br />compensation for their [services commensurate with the responsibilities devolved upon them. <br /> Signed - P.E. Wnukoski, Chairman,Civic Affairs Com." <br /> <br />On:motion filed. <br /> <br /> 57-435 - Motion of Mr. Smith that the .Counci'l hold a,conference in January, concern <br />ing salary and wage adjustments£or city employees, other than the Fire and Police Departments, was adopted. <br /> <br /> 57~36 - Motion of Mr. Weiseman that an appropriate resolntion be prepared and pre <br />· .sented to the City Attorney, n.C. Barclay, who retires December 31st, 1957, was adopted. <br /> <br />57-437 - Motion of Mr. Baker to suspend the rules to hear from M. Katz, was adopted <br />Mr. Katz spoke concerning the floo~'~condition at the north end of Dinwiddie Street <br /> <br />57-438 - Mr. Baker presented the following resolution and moved its adoption: <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION CALLING FOR FREE TWO-HOUR PARKING IN METEPID ZONES ON THE <br />STREETS OF PORTSMOUTH CITY'S CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, ~LN~ OF THE ~ERCH~NTS IN THE City of Portsmouth have suffered a <br />decrease ~n gross receipts for the current year, and - <br /> WHEP~AS, determined advertising by our sister city and convenient tunnel <br />transportation to the Norfolk shopping area have caused many Portsmouth residents to go <br />to~tha~ city to make purchases, and <br /> WHEREAS, the disastrous High Street fire has caused relocation and loss of <br />business affecting the economy of our central business district, and <br /> WHEREAS, IT IS THE BOUNDEN DUTY OF THE City Council. to protect the economic <br />stability of our city insofar as possible, therefore be it <br /> RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth thsr free two-hour parking <br />be allewed in the metered zones of downtown Portsmouth, from December llth through December <br />24th, 1957; King Square, Edinburgh Square and Proctor Square parking lots excepted." <br /> <br />~r.
