Everhart, Chairman of the Education Cbmmittee of the Chamber of Commerce. <br /> <br /> "It is a great pleasure for me ~o advise you that the Board of Directors of the Cham~ <br />bet of Co~erce, after a meetin~ on January 9th, unanimously passed a motion instructing the Secretary to communi- <br />cate with.members of fhe City Council and congratulate them upon their efforts in connection with the activities <br />of their Transportation Committee.- The directors are unanimously in favor of Cit~ Council furnishing adequate bus <br />~ransportatio~ because it is essential in our community. <br /> <br /> "At the last meeting of the Board of Directors of the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce, <br />the writer presented extracts from an ordinance relating ~o 13ankruptcy and going out or-business sales. Both or - <br />dinances were passed by your~norablb body on first reading at the first time, this report was made and I learned <br />by the papers that it has now passed second reading. <br /> The purpose of this letter is ~o convey to you the thanks of the Directors of the <br />Chamber of Commerce for your efforts in..this matter and to congratulate you upon your~energetic endeavors on be - <br />half of the citizens of our community," <br /> <br />On motion filed. <br /> <br />58-38,- The following letter from the Wes{ Side Civic League was read: <br /> <br />make a small charge to the u~ility companies <br /> In addition to <br />may pay his bill at the following plabes: <br /> Telephone: <br /> <br /> "The West Side Civic League would like To request that the City of Portsmouth give <br />the citizens of Portsmouth a service that is now e~$ended by the other three ~u~lic utilities, by allowing the <br />paymen~ of 'the water bill to be made an the banks or~a~ ~ertain stores. Yours for a more progressive city." <br /> <br />was adopted. <br /> <br />Motion of Mr. Hintonto refer to the City Manager for report and recommendation, <br /> <br />58-39 - The following letter from the Planning Commission was read: <br /> <br /> "At the reques~ of the City Manager and the Recreation Bureau, the Planning Com - <br />mission has recently made studies for the development of playfieldfacilit~es on two alternate sites in ~he Truxton-I <br />Doublas Park area. One,of these sites is the city-owned land adjacent to the Truxton Elementary School, the. otherI <br />is on land owned by the School Board adjacent to the Douglas Park Elementary School. Prints of both studies are at-I <br />tached hereto. <br /> By unanimous~action the Planning Commission endorses the Douglas Park location an <br />recommends to City Council that steps be taken to develop this site with expedienc~. This action was taken after <br />consultation with officials of the Recreation Bureau and the Superintendent of Schools." <br /> <br /> Notion of Mr. Smith to suspend the rules to hear from interested parties, was <br />adopted. <br /> Harvey N. Johnson, President! Wilson Ward Civic League and C.~. Ellis spoke for <br />the project but against any curtailment of the playground area at the Truxton School. <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Hinton to cuncur in the recommendation of the Planning Commission <br />and to refer'to the City Manager to obtain cost of this projdct; was adopted. <br /> <br /> 58-40 - <br />providing locker rooms, concession stands and rest rooms on the city playgrounds'~nd <br />lng in March, was adopted. <br /> <br />On motion adjourned. <br /> <br />President. <br /> <br />Motion of Mr. Hinton to refer to the City Manager to obtain the cost of <br /> re po~. k ~a~t~f. ir s t meet- <br /> <br /> <br />
