fully m~de application.to the Coun~l for appointment to fill any vacancy which~e~ists in the office of Justice
of the Peace. As you gentleme~ realize, 'such a vacancy now exists. I ~am well knqwn to each individual member
of the Ceunc%l and my~qualificat~ons to fill this aRpointive office, I helieKe, will meet any and ~11 require-
ments, as I am not only a business man with considerable experience, plus a pr~-law student of the University
of Virginia, but ~I am also very familiar ~ith the ta~s applicable to Justices of the Peace and their functions.
May I add, at this crucial time facing the citizens of portsmouth, we are in need of a Justice of the Peace with
such qualifications. My interest in this ma~er is to be of service to the citizens of Portsmouth. Your consi-
deration and appointment will.be appreciated.'~ (Signed) Ervin E. Kline, 24 Washington St.?
"With the recent death of Mr. Jacison, Justice of the Peace appointed from HarrisQn Ward,
a vacancy now occurs in the office o~ Justice of the Peace.from our Ward.~By thi~ letter, I would like to file
my application fen appointment to this ~f~ice., I have been a resident of P~rt~moulh ~or:2S years and except for
the period of time spent i~ the ~rmy during World Wa~ II, as a mamebe~ of the parachute troops, I have been a
resident of HarPison Ward for all of 2hose .28 years. I presently real,de' at 2114 E~ergreen Place in Harriso~
Ward and have my place of business, a grocery store, at 1415 Gosport Road, also in Harrison Ward.
Outside oi a tra£Tic ticket many years ago, I have' no recbyd of any police court convic-
tions. I received an honorabie discharge in 1945 after service overseas, and ~eceived the purple heart for wounds
received on Anzio Beachhead. Being widely' known in Harrison Ward and beinE available to the general public at
my place of business, I feel'that I could commendabl~ serve as Justice of the Peace. My btckground ih the £n -
surance and grocery field has given me adequate training the administrative process for wh~ h such an officer
should be responsible. (Signed) John W. Juliano, Jr., 2114 Evergreen Place."

· 58-54 -- "Please be advised ~hat Posey S. Harris has been assessed for tangible personal
property valued for $250.00 with taxes amounting to $6.88. Our ~nvestigation reveals that the correct assessment
should have been $100.00 with taxes amounting to $2.75, representing an over-assessment of taxes amounting to
$4;I3 . The taxpayer has paid the original tax notice #6568 as evidenced by his receipted tax bill. AS this is
definitely an over-payment of $4.13, we sincerely request that a refund in this amount be made to the taxpayer.
(Signed) L.E. Turlingtou, Conunissioner of Revenue~"
