Gaskins was read: <br /> <br /> "The signers o£ the recent petition circulated in Shes Terrace wish to <br /> community. In doing this you have eased a hardship for many people. <br /> thank <br /> VOU <br /> for <br /> restoring <br /> bus <br /> in <br /> The Citizens Transporta-tion Committee has recommended an increase in fare <br /> _~_.iCh we feel should be studied more by the Council before granting this request. <br /> The committee also stated that other cities wore paying more bus fares <br /> <br /> than Portsmouth. <br /> We would like for this committee or the Portsmouth Transit Company to name: <br /> one city or town in Virginia that has raised the fare from l0 cents to l? cents for ONE zone in the past six years <br /> done." <br /> C. <br /> Gaskins <br />-as our city has (signed <br /> <br /> On motion filed. <br /> <br />58-103 - The following letter from Local #550 IATSE and MPMO was read: <br /> <br /> 'I am the Business Agent for the Motion Picture Machine Opera,ors, Local <br />550. This union zs affiliated with tho AFL-CIO. Approximatel} a month ago I applied to the City Manager and <br />City Attorney for a permit ~o c~istribute small circulars from house ~o house, a copy of which is at~ached hereto. <br />The City Attorney advised methat he would look into the matter as it might involve the city. I gave Nit. Livesay <br />the City Attorney, ~wo telephone numbers a~ which he could reach me. The matter now has keen pending before the <br />City Manager and City Attorney approximately a month, and I have heard nothing from them regarding the application <br />For your information I wish to sta~e to yoq that the City of Norfolk and Norfolk County, without hesitation, <br />granted permits on the day which they were applied for. <br /> I would appreciate ii if ~ou would allow me to appear before your body at <br />your meeting next Tuesday evening, March 25th., so that I might present this matter to you. <br /> I have been a lifelong resident of the City of Portsmouth and I feel that <br /> I am entitled to have the privilege of appearing before you." <br /> (signed William R. Outten spoke and stated the matter had been straightened <br /> <br />58-104 - The following letter from the Portsmouth CoMncil, Parents & Teachers <br /> <br /> "Our new school building program has for some time been expanding re care <br />for the increase in school age populations however, teachers' salaries have no~ increased sufficiently in Ports- <br />mouth to keep up with expanding pay elsewhere. <br /> We cannot hope Eo retain the ~eachers we have or recruit new ones on our <br />sub-standard pay scale. Therefore, we tho Portsmouth Counnil ~fParent ar~ Teachers Associations go on record <br />advocating that our City Council appropriate sufficient funds for the Portsmouth School Board to give a minimu~ <br />pay increase for each teacher of three hundred dollars per annam ($300.00) beginning with the 1958-59 fiscal year~ <br /> (signed Mrs. Jeff R. Wallace was read: <br /> <br /> "It is our desire to express genuine gratitude for your honesty and extreme <br />patience in trying to forge ahead and benefit the City of Portsmouth. We would register, mn a quiet way, support <br />of your program--we want that Park! --and all the program re benefit the lives of the citizens. <br /> May God grant you increased patience and efforts in the trying days that <br />lie ahead. We, and some citizens like us, need men like you at the helm." <br /> <br /> <br />
