'Aprii Sth., 1958 <br /> <br />58-123 - The following letter from the Citizens Protective League was road: <br /> <br /> publzc meeting of som~ ~hree hu~d~ed citizens of Portsmouth, sponsored by the <br />Exe6utive CommitTee of the Oi~izens Protective Loague, h~ld on Wednesday, Ma~ch ~$, 1958 at the Woodrow Wilson <br />High School Auditorium, directed that t p resent to you the following resolution: <br /> <br />On motion <br /> <br />President <br /> <br /> ~WHEREAS, the City Council, by action taken in December 1957, authorized the execution <br /> of an option zo purchase from the Seaboard Airline Railway Company, for the sum of <br /> $300,000.00, a portion of its waterfront property located in the City of Portsmouth, <br /> Virginia, and delivered to the said Railway Company a check in the amount of <br /> $10,000.00 as earnest money, and <br />WHEREAS, the expressed prupose of acquiring this ~roperty was to establish thereon <br />the p~opo~ed Merr~m~6 P~rk, and <br />WHERE&S, it is ~he opinion of this assembly thai the City should only acquire real <br />property when it has been publicly established that a justifiable need for the <br />property exists, in order to provide adecluate space for the efficient and economical <br />conduct of norma~ municipal activities, and <br />FURTHER, in our opinion, ~dequa~e justification for the acquisition of the property <br />hereinabove mentioned has not been established, <br />~NOW, '1~REFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the l~norable City Council be requested to <br />immediately take appropriate action to abrogate the aforementioned option with the <br />said Railway Company, and zo forfeit the deposit of $10~000.00 should it not be <br />possible~to obtain its re~urn from the Optionor.
