Renewal Administration has requested that this body <br />reaffirm its support of the subject project, <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT. RESODVED, by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia, that continuation and completion of th e Lincolnsville Urban <br />Renewal Area project are in the best interests of' the City of Portsmouth <br />and this body real.firms its support of the said project." <br /> <br /> The City Attorney presented the following letter: <br /> <br /> 58-154.1 "In accordance'with our conversation of May 1st, I have discussed the matter of the <br />~ross receipts tax of B.L. Barnes and can offer the following: <br /> ~l. Cash payment of $100.00 and a note for the amount due payable at the <br /> rate of $100.00 per month bearing ~terest at the rate of 3% per annum. <br /> <br />Ii~'_addition, but not as a prerequisite, I respectfully renew the reques~ <br />that the gross receipts tax levied by the City be abolished in order that <br />my client may have an opportunity to make capital outlays that will give <br />better service to some twenty to thirty thousand passengers per month. <br /> <br />I~ the event that Council does not act favorably on the above request, I <br />respectfully urge that the gross receipms max De cut to 1/2 of 1% as an <br />equitable and realistic measure mo help this utility help the City. <br /> (Signed) Gordon F. Mrarsh." <br /> <br />The Council took no action. <br /> <br /> 58-143 - The City Attorney, reporting on the letter from the City Sengeant, request- <br />ing that Percy Lee Host, ~ retired ~ember o~ the Fire Department, be allowed to accept employment in his office, <br />reported that there were no ordinances which would lYrohibit the employment as he was retired previous to the new <br />pension plan adopted by the City Council. <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Smith that Mr. Host be allowed to accept 5emporary employment was <br />adopted. <br /> <br />58-155 -The City~ Attorney presented mhe following le{ter: <br /> <br />on first reading." <br /> <br />"I submit the attached amendment to the City Code and recommend that it be placed <br /> <br />Notion of Mr. Hinton to place the following ordinance on first reading,was adopted: <br /> <br />"AN ORDINANCE T~ AMEND THE CODE OF THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA, 1951, <br />BY ADDING THERETO SECTION 8-24Z1 WF~L&TING TO THE APPOINTNENT OF AGENCIES <br />FOR COLLECTION OF. WATER AND SEWER BILLS" <br /> <br />58-129 - <br /> <br /> UNFINISHED BUSLNESS - <br /> <br />The following letter from the Planning Commission was read: <br /> <br /> "At a regular meeting on May 1st, 1958, the Planning Commission considered the re - <br />quest of Construction ~_ssociates Inc., for the vacation and closing of the following streets: <br /> Fauquier Ave., from the north side of the relocation of <br /> Race St. to the ~outh side of Bart St. <br /> <br />Clifford S~t., from the east side of ~auquier Ave. mo the <br />east side of Loudoun Ave. <br /> <br />Griffin St., from the east side of Fauqnier Ave. to the east <br />side of Loudoun Ave. <br /> <br /> Race St., from the easm side of Fauquier Ave. to the north <br /> side of the relocation of Race St. <br />By unanimous action the Planning Commission recommends that the above streets be <br /> <br />closed." <br /> <br />Motion of Mr. Hinton ~o concur in the recommendation of the Planning Cdmmission, <br /> <br />was adopted. <br /> <br />58-129 - The following letter £rem the viewers appointed for the closing of cer- <br /> <br /> "The undersigned viewers, elected by the Codncil of the City of Portsmouth, <br />pursuant to a resolution adopted at its regular meeting in April 22, 1958, did, on the 30th day of April, 1958, <br />convene in the ares set £orth in the resolution, and examine the premises arsi the following streets proposed to <br />be closed: <br /> Fauquier Ave., from the north side of th~ re-location of <br /> Race St. to the south side of Bart Street. <br /> <br />Clifford St. from the east side of Fauquier Ave. to the easm <br />Side of~Londoun~Ave. <br /> <br />Griffin St. from the east side of Fauquier Ave. to the easz <br />side of Loudoun Ave. <br /> <br />Race St., from the east side of Fauquier Ave. to the north side <br />of the re-location of Race St. <br /> <br /> <br />
