If future e~periments sheuld produce an additional type of copper drainage
tube, our ordinance would again have to be amended to allow the use of this
new type. The leading code consultants now recommend that codes be written to
require conformance to certain accepted specifications rather than requiring
specific types of materials. Therefore, if it is felt necessary to restrict
the use of copper in the plumbing ordinance, then i suggest that the following
amendment be added to the proposed ordinance amendment.

Copper tubing used £or drainage purposes shall conform to the American
Society for Testing Materials specification, designation B306-57 and
any revisions thereto.
This would allow the use of any material equal to or better than this minimum
specification whether it has a designation of Type K, L, M, DWV or any other
in the future which would meet these minimum speci-
type
which
may
be
developed

£ications.
We have been in contact with the American Society for Testing Materials~ the
American Standards Association and the Superintendent of Documents of the Govern-
ment Printing Office requesting information regarding any specifications they may
have on copper[tubing £or crainagepurposes. The American Society for Testing
Materials is the only one of these organizations which has s~ch specifications.
A copy of this specification is attached hereto. If any further information ia
desired we will make every effort to supply it. (Signed) B.S. Trant, Building
Inspector."
"The Portsmouth Associated Plumbing ~ud Heating Contractors went over the copy of
the ordinance to amend the Code of the City of Portsmouth, 1951, by amending
Section 24-94 thereof, relating to soil, drain, waste and vent pipe generally,
at our last meeting.
We feel that this amendment would offer the public the benefits of ~mprovements
that th~ plumbing industry has developed in the last few years.
Since reading over this code amendment, we have heard that it has been tabled to
a fhture date. The members of the Planning ~seciation would like ~o see this
amendment passed as it was first drava~ up. We will appreciate anything you gent-
lemen can do to pass this amendment. (Signed) R. TripletS, Jr., Exec. Sec."
