"On November 26th, 1957, the Council relipved Taxes in the amount of $70.90 on pro - <br />perry at 2024 Lincoln St., assessed in the n~une of Fairlawn Realty Company. <br /> The taxes were relieved as the property was sold to a church. The correct amount of <br />the taxes was $74.90 rather than $70.90. This left a balance of $~.0O on the hooks and I hereby request the Coun- <br />cil To relieve these taxes along with the taxes described in the attached letter." <br /> 'I am describing below certain pieces of property which have been on our land b~oks <br />for over twenty years, in fact, one piece is delinquent since 1910. <br /> Our recent assessor states that~this property does not actually exist and we have <br />been in error in assessing Taxes against this property. I have ~ried to locate it on the map books but have faile~ <br />to find any record of it. <br /> 1. Jane Wilson Bart St. <br /> 2. William Howard Jones 23 N. S. 20th St. <br /> 3. Please remove these items from your real estate tax receivables. J.L. Jolliff, <br /> Delinquent Tax Collector." <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. ~eiseman that the taxes be relieved, was adopted. <br /> <br /> 58-235 - The City Clerk reportedtthat it would be necessary to elect a judge for <br /> the Municipal Court for a four year term beginning September ist, 1958. ~ <br /> <br /> The following letter from Judge W.H.W. Cassell was read: <br /> <br /> "The undersigned, W.H.W. Cassell, respectfully requests that he be considered for re <br /> election to the position of Judge of the Municipal Court of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, (formerly Justice of <br /> the Civil and Police Court). for the new term to begin on September 1st, 1958, as provided by the Charter of the <br /> City of Portsmouth, Virginia, Chapter IX, Sectionl. He also respectfully, requeststhat he be designated to act as <br /> judge of the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court of the City of Portsmouth, Virg~a, for the new tsrm. <br /> Motion. of Mr. Smith to go into the election of a Judge for the Municipal Court, was <br /> adopted. <br /> <br />Ur. Smith nominated W.H.W. Cassello <br /> <br /> Motion of N_r. Weisemsn that nominations be closed, was adopted. <br /> <br /> Motion of ~r. Kirby that W.H.W. Cassell be declared elected Judge for the Municipal <br />Court, for a four yea? term beginning September 1st, 1958, was. adopted. <br /> Motion of My. Scott ~hat Judge Cassell be designated to act as Judge of the Juvenile <br />and Domestic Relations Court for a four year term beginning September 1st, 1958, was adopted. <br /> 58-236 - The following applications for the position of Justice of Peace for Jacksoz <br /> <br />George J. Sullivan <br />Samuel chovitz <br />Herman H Markham <br />HarreI1 N King." <br /> <br /> Motion of ~. Hinton re lay on the table until next meeting, was adopted. <br /> <br /> 58-~37 - The following letter from the Commissioner of Rege~e was read: <br /> <br /> "Please be advised ~hat Bernard B. Dudginski was assessed for tangible personal <br />property in the City.of Portsmouth in 1957 with taxes amo~ntin~ to $8.~5. Our investigation reveals that he was <br />not liable for taxes here due to his military statu~. The taxpayer has paid the original Tax notice #4209 as evi- <br />denced by his receipted tax bill. As this is definitely an erroneous assessment, we sincerely request that a re - <br />fund in the amount of $8%2S, be made ~o the taxpayer." <br /> Motion of Mr. Weiseman to approve the refund on first read~wa~/ ~do~d. ~ <br /> On motion adjourned. <br /> <br /> City Clerk. <br /> <br />Approved - <br /> <br /> President. <br /> <br /> <br />
