Livesay spoke, requesting that his resignat$on be withdrawn. <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Bartlett that the City Attorney, J.S. Livesay, be permitted to <br />withdraw his resignation, w~s adopted. <br /> <br /> 58-236 - The following applications for Justice of Peace for Jackson Ward, laid on table <br />at last meeting, were taken up and read: <br /> <br />Harrell N King, <br />George Sullivan <br />Samuel Chovitz <br /> <br />Chesley R. Boggs <br />Raymond E. Dunnavant <br /> <br />58- <br /> <br />Motion of Mr. Walker to go into-the election of s Justice of'Peace for Jackson <br /> <br />Ward, was adopted. <br /> <br />On motion of Mr. Weiseman, nominations were closed. <br /> <br />Vote being taken, Mr. Dunnavant was elected Justice of Peace for Jackson Ward. <br /> <br />NEW BUS II~ES S <br /> <br />58-304 - The following resolution from the Norfolk County Board of Supervisors was read: <br /> <br />"VIRGINIA: The regular meeting of the Board of Supervisors of Norfolk <br />County, was held in the Supervisors' room az the Clerk's Office, Tuesday, <br />September 9, 1958, at 10:00 A.M., and the following resolution was adopted: <br /> <br />~Lr. Haywood presented a letter from ~_r. Gordon Keith, Chairman of the <br />Civic Affairs Committee of the Jolliff Men'sCivic Club, in which he <br />stated that many complaints have been registered with the said civic <br />club regarding smoke and odor com~ng from the Portsmouth City dump near <br />Route 58. He further stated that membeFs of the civic club had paid <br />visits to the said dump and found many small fires burning on the <br />dum~, causing thick smoke blankets on Route 58, the Hodges Ferry and <br />Hodges Manor sections similar ~o a heavy fog. The civic club was request- <br />ing that something be done to eliminate this condition. <br /> <br />Supervisor Haywood s~a~ed that he had received numerous complaints from <br />the residents of Elizabeth Manor and Chadswyck Homes, also. <br /> <br />On motion made by Mr. Haywood, seconded by Mr. Treakle, the Board hereby <br />requests the City of Portsmouth to take necessary steps ~o abate this <br />nuisance as early as possible. <br />All voting Yes." <br /> <br />Motion of Mr. Smith to refer to the City Manager for investigation and report, <br /> <br />was adopted. <br /> <br />58-305 - The following letter from John R. Porter, Jr. was read: <br /> <br /> "I should like to tender herewith my resignation as Special Justice for the <br />Lunacy Commissions in the City of Portsmouth in view of my recent appointment as Clerk of the Court of Hustings <br />for the City of Portsmouth, the resignation to be effective immediately. I shall be delighted to give any <br />assistance that I can in the interim between this regisngation and any new appointment and I thank you for the <br />privildge of having served you and the City in this capacity." <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Weiseman that Mr. Porter's resignation be accepted, with thanks <br />for his services and sincere congratulations on his new appointment, was adopted. <br /> <br />58-306 - The following letter from the Superintendenn of Schools was read: <br /> <br /> "The School Board awarded the contract for the construction of the Food Service <br />~ddition ~o Truxton Elementary School to W.B? Meredith II, low bidder, for the sum of $50,325.~00.. The equipment <br />contract ~as awarded To Acme Equipment Co., Inc., low bidder for the sum of $13,994. This is a part o£ the build~ <br />lng program formally approved by the City Council. There is inclosed a copy of all bids. <br /> These contracts were awarded subject to the approval of the City Council and <br />we respectfully reques~ your approval of these con~rac~s au the earliest possible date." <br /> <br /> <br />
