D~cember
Zgth,
1959

j '' t ' ' the- ha
his past November 26th,
nzghts up to 9 30 P.M., but still on an hourly bas~s only. y unnzng buses on Sundays and holzdays and at
I somehow feel that this is but a temporary improvement to offset the POrtsmouth
Transit Company's reqnes~ to operate buses in the' annexed area; 'Once they-are certain they have the backing of
City Council and are positive the PTC will notbe permitted to'extend their present routes, I have aa doubt but
that we will once again receive our previous 'unsatisfactory~ service. I am at a loss to understand the ex -
Pression of sympathy for Mr. Barnes that has been attributed to several of you gentlemen. In past years, PTC
took over part of Mr. Barnes' territory (because he was operating within city limits) and they ran buses into
~°~u~lo~c~e years ~rior ~o annexation of that community. If the financial w ......
- ~ =um~ *o ezm zor the acquisition of a part of his line as
was done when the Tunnel Commission p~id N~rfolk Count~ for taking over the ferries~ and as the City of Ports-
mouth is doing for the n~wly annexec portion of Norfolk County,

· People in our ~eam~dn~ty felt that getting dece~ bus service would be our most
noticeabls immediate benefi~ from annexation. Won't you please give the matter further thought by inquiring
into the service we have received in the past, and asking what we may hope for in the future before you positiveSy
turn down the request o f the Portsmouth Transit Company. (Signed) Ralph J Underwood."

Motion of Mr. Weisema~ that the cormnunication he received and referred to a
Council conference on the bus situation, was 'adopted, without dissenting .vote.

Civic League, was read: 59-345- The following communication from Guy M Gaskill, President, Hodges Manor

"The Hodges Manor Civic Lea§ue strongly favors allowing the Portsmouth Transit
Company to opermte buses in our area, and respectfully ask 'that you permit them to do so.

We 'think that the present bus service furnished us by the Co~n~nnity Bus Com-
pany at its best is not too good for we have s erv~ce or~ly once each hour, and it has only been since this
past November ~6th that we had any buses on a Sunday or holiday.

It would seem only fair tEat'Mr. Barnes should be reimbursed s fair sum for
the portion of his line that the PTC takes over, as has been the practice in similar annexation procedures in
this community of late.

When the annexation of our area by the Ciz~ of POrtsmouth'became a certainty,
o~e of the immediate~, benefits we most counted on was a better bus service."

Motion of Mr. Breedlove that the communication be received as information and
referred to a conference of the Council on transit matters, was adopted, without~dissenting ~o,r~.

On motion adjourned.

Approved -

City Clerk
