It was the concensus qf opinion_that such action would be aprogressive step for our City <br />to take because of the high federal employee population. It is ourdesire that you gentlemen reconsider the or - <br />dinance proposing the Charter smendmentat your~next.regular meeting. Thank you for your co-operation in this <br />matter. (Signed) Joseph Wisniewski, Jr., Chairman of ~ablic Affairs and John P L~igh,~r., President." <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Bartlett to acknowledge and receive the letter as information, was <br />adopted, without dissenting vote. <br /> <br /> 60-24 - .The following.letter from the Commanding Officer of the U S Naval Hospital <br />Porfsmouth~ Va.,~was. read: . . <br /> <br /> "Your letter of January 14th, enclosing the resolution adopted by the City Council of <br />Portsmouth pertaining to the Christmas displays and Navy cooperation is gratefully acknowledged. We are more <br />than pleased with what I consider to he an almost unprecedented action by a local connnunity in its relation to <br />the naval service. He shall treasure the sentiment always and are taking, steps to fully advise all of our <br />people as to the generous action of your City. ~e always try to be good citizens in communities where we serve <br />and were particularly pleased with this m~gnificent gesture. I would appreciate your brin~ingthis to the at - <br />tention of the City Council (S~gned H J Van Peahen, Rear Admiral MC USN." <br /> <br />Motion of Mr. Breedlove that the letter he received was adopted, without disseniing vote1 <br /> <br /> 60-25 - The following letter from the Rotlingwood Civic Club signed by Mrs. Vera ~ <br />Murray, Sec., was read: <br /> <br /> "~n beAxalf of the Rollingwood Civic Club, I wish to state our Club desires to go on re - <br />cord as favoring continued operation of ~he Community Bus service in this are. The Community Bus Service has <br />rendered very good sergice for, esidents, in this section for some time.and-the rates of fare of this company are <br />also considered reasonable and just. We prefer this public transportation systemfor the newly annexed area of <br />the City to any other that has been suggested. We would also like to go on record as favoring elimination of <br />the ~oun¢ilmanic primaries£or theCit~.~Cewncil _of the~City:of-Portsmouth .... ~e realiz~ an ordinance to this <br />effect was considered by the City Council back in December 1~59 and rejected at that time; but should further <br />consideration be given this matter, we would like to have our name added to those favoring its elimination." <br /> <br /> Motion of~r. Bartlett to refer the matter to an~early-conference of the Council for <br />study and disposal, was adopted, without dissenting vote. <br /> <br />60-27 - Motion ~o grant Mrs. James Cooper, of 102 Tenth Ave., the privilege of the floor <br /> <br />was adopted. <br /> <br />Mrs. Cooper asked for relief from a condition caused by lice from pigeons. <br /> <br />Health Department. <br /> <br />The City Manager was requested to talk with /~rs.
