At a regular meeting of the City Council, held~on January 24th, 19B1, there were present: <br /> <br />R, Irvine Smith, Jack P. Barnes, W.R. Breedlove, W.T~ Leary, n.B. Seward, <br />George R. Walker, H. E. ~eiseman, A.P. Johnson,Jr., City Manager, and J.S. <br />Livesay, Jr., City Attorney. <br />The meeting was opehed with prayer by Mr. Walker. <br />Minutes of regular meeting held on January 10th, 1961 were read and approved. <br /> <br />B1-9. The £ollowin~ Notice and Letter from the-Planning Co~mmission were read: <br /> <br /> "Pursuant to the provisions of the Zoning Ordinance, Notice is hereby given that a Public <br />Hearing will bs held a~ 7:30 ~.Mo, on Tuesday, January 24th~ 1961, in the Council Chamber, Municipal Building, <br />Portsmouth, Va., on the following: <br /> <br />72-60 - Application of Charles 'A. Rose to rezone property located on the northeast <br />corner of Bainbridge Boulevard and George Washington Highway, fronting 283.97 feet on <br />George Washington Highway by 150 feet deep. Application ~o rezone from A Single <br />Family Dwelling District to-G Commercial Business District. <br /> <br />73-60 - Application of Ruth Schwetz to rezone property beginning on the southeast <br />corner of Kirn Avenue and Queen Street, thence s6uth 71 feet, thence easterly 119.15 <br />feet, thence northeasterly approximately 80 feet, thence northeasterly approximately <br />18 feet to Queen Street, thence westerly along Queen Street-7Z.74 feet to the point <br />of origz~. Lots 188 and 189.- Application to rezone from D Multiple Family Dwelling <br />District to F Local Business District." <br /> <br /> "At its regular monthly meeting on January 6th, 1961, the City Planning Commission conducted <br />public hearings on the two followzng rezoning applications and recommends their approval: <br /> <br />72-60 Application of Charles A. A. Rose. <br /> <br />Jehn~ A MacKenzie spoke for the application. <br /> <br /> ~otion of Mr. Barnes to concur in the recommendation of the Planning <br />the application on first reading was adopted, without dissenting vote. <br /> <br />73-60 - Ruth Schwetz. <br /> <br />Commission and place <br /> <br /> Motion -of Mr. Breedlove to approve the recommendation of the Planning Commission and plac~ <br />the application on first reading was adopted, without dissenting vote. <br /> <br />In connection with Application 72-60, the following communication from the Planning Commis- <br /> <br />sion wBs read: <br /> <br /> "At a regular meeting on January 6, 1961, the City Planning Commission considered the sale <br />of a small parcel of city-owned land on Bainbridge Ave. This job of property is-the result of a recent street <br />closure. The Planning Commission recommends the sale of this land. (Signed) J. Brewer Moore, Director." <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Leary that sealed bids be received for the purchase of the land described <br />was adopted without disse~ting vote. <br /> <br /> The following reports from the City Manager were read: <br /> <br /> 61-10 "I submit the attached resolution and recommend its adoption. <br />of congratulations to Dr. MacCarter Adams, authorized a~ the last Council meeting." <br /> <br />It is a resolution <br /> <br /> On motion Of Mr. Barnes, the following resolution was adopted, without dissenting vote: <br /> <br />"WHEREAS, the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce has selected <br />Doctor Mac Carter Adams as one of,the ~ten outstanding young men of <br />America for the~Dar 1960, said honor having been richly deserved in <br />recognition of DOctorAdams': work in the successful solution of the <br />~t~Co~iine~tal ballistic missiDe re-entry problem; and <br /> WHEREAS, Doctor Mac Carter Adams is a native of the City of Ports- <br />mouth, having gruddated from Woodrow Wilson High School as an honor <br />student with an out,tending record' in extra-curricula activities, <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Ports- <br />mouth, virginia, that congratulations and best wishes for continued <br />success are hereby expressed and extended in behalf of the citizens of <br />this City zo Doetor Mac Carter Adams upon his having been selected as <br />one of the ~en outstanding young men for the year 1960. <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLYED that a copy of these resolutions be spread <br />upon the minutes of the City Counqi~, and that certified copies be sen~ <br />by the City Clerk ~o Doctor Mac Carter Adams, his mother, Mrs, Neville <br />Adams, and to the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce." <br /> <br />61-11 - "I submit the attached agreement and recommend that the proper city officials he <br /> <br /> <br />
