61-160 - The following commpnicatio~ from WAVY was read: <br /> <br /> "Have you ever been worried because pne of your family was missing? Well, my wife <br />and I have and let me say here and now, it is terrifying. Last Friday afternoon, May 26th, 'Peppy' our 135 lb <br />St. Bernard was abducted from our neighborhood by_persons unknown.. When 'Peppy failed to return by 9:30 P.M., <br />an all-out search was started by WAVY personnel. Later that evening an anonymous caller reported that 'Peppy' <br />had been seen in the Highland Park area. Thanks to zhe watchful eye of our night patrol policemen, 'Peppy' <br />was soon safely home. 'Peppy will be a regulay companion of all the children zn the Tidewater area on June 3rd <br />when she begins appearing on WAVY-TV's 'Shipwreck Island' program, ~ locally produced children'~ show. <br /> All i35 pounds of 'Peppy' made friends with her rescuers at Police headquarters <br />but they had~trouble tryin~ to convince her that she was no~ a lap dog. This just proves once again that, no <br />matter how large or how small you may be, you can not escape the watchful eye of the Portsmouth Polzce DepartmenT <br /> (Signed Wm. P. McLean.) <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Barnes 5o acknowledge and pass on to the Police Department, was <br />adopted, without dissenting vote. <br /> <br />61-161 - The following communication from Carter Lee Gore was read: <br /> <br /> "I respectfully submit my resignation as Assistant City Attorney of Portsmouth. <br />have been accepted for graduate study by the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration beginning in <br />September. I have given this opportunity careful consideration, and although it is with reluctance that I leave <br />the City of Portsmouth, I believe that I should use this~oppo~tunity'to fur%her my education'. <br /> I appreciate the confidence the Council showed in n~ in appointing me to the newly <br />created position of Assistant City Attorney, in 1959; and I appreciate the consideration and co-operation I have <br />received from the Council, fellow City employees, a nd citizens of Portsmouth during the time I have been Assis- <br />tan~ City Attorney. It has been a pleasure to serve, the City, and ~ shall watch with interest the growth and <br />progress of Portsmouth." <br /> <br />Motion of Mr. Weiseman to refer to an early conference was adopted, without dissent- <br /> <br /> 61-162 - Motion of Mr. Barnes that the City'Manager make a study of the possible <br />location and construction of boa~ ramps in the City and report his findings ~o the Council for action, was <br />adopted, without dissenting vote. <br /> <br /> 61-163 - Motion of ~r. Barnes that the possibility of appointing a committee to <br />study the feasibility of establishing a commercial airport west of Portsmouth be referred to a conference and <br />that the cities and counties west of the City be invited to join in this study was adopted, without dissenting <br />vote. <br /> <br />6t-16~.-The following communication from Doyntown Portsmouth Association was read: <br /> <br /> "On June 6, at a meeting of the membership of the Downtown Portsmouth Association, <br />the following resolution was unanimously adopted, and I was instructed to forward a copy no you, to the Presi- <br />dent of' the Portsmouth Museum Association, to the President of the Portsmouth Service League, and to release <br />it to the newspapers. <br /> WHEREAS, the Portsmouth S~rvice League has unde~r.[aken ~no raise <br /> $75,000 to renovate the machine shop building at the waterfront to <br /> house a naval museum: <br /> WHEREAS: the City of Portsmouth and the Navy Department have <br /> come to agreement whereby the Navy will lend the Shipyard Museum <br /> to the City~ <br /> .. WHEREAS, the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard ~useum, Incorporated has <br /> been organized to staff the museum, no operate it, no plan its budgen <br /> and supervise the spending of its funds - - <br /> NOW: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that~the Doar~town Portsmouth Association <br /> looks with great favor on their plan, pledges:itself to help in their <br /> prompt accomplishment, and encourages its members to make subscripnions <br /> to the $75,000 fund needed £o~renovate the bhildin%. <br /> Our membership will be encouraged to support this projecu,d <br /> <br /> Motioh of Mr. Weiseman that <br />thanks was adopted, without dissenting vote. <br /> <br />the cor~munication be received and acknowledged with <br /> <br />On motion adjourned. <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br />President <br /> <br /> <br />
