Motion of Mr. Weiseman that the ~urvey be authorized was adopte~ without dissenting <br />vote. <br /> <br /> 61- 213- Motion of Mr. Leafy to go into the election of School Board members was <br />adopted, without dissenting vote. <br /> <br /> Mr. Barnes nominated Burrell R. Johnson to represent District No. 1 on the School <br /> <br />Board. <br /> <br />Motion of Mr. Weiseman to close nominations was adopted. <br /> <br /> Vote being taken, Mr. Johnson was elected a member of the Portsmouth School Board for <br />a term of three years,/and by the following vote: <br /> beginning July 1, 1961 <br /> Ayes: Smith, Atkinson, Barnes, Leafy, Walker, Weiseman <br /> Nays: None <br /> <br />Mr. Weiseman nominated B. M. Goode to succeed himself. <br /> <br />Motion of Mr. Leafy to close the nominations was adopted. <br /> <br /> Vote being taken, Mr. Goode was elected a member of the Planning Commission for a term <br />of four years~ beginning June 1st, t961, and by the following vote: <br /> <br /> Ayes: Smith, Atkinson, Barnes, Leark, Walker, Weiseman <br /> Nays: None <br /> 6!-207 - Appropriation of 96,500. from Capital Improvement Fund, placed on first <br />reading at last meeting was taken up and on motion of Mr. Barnes, ~6,500.for publication of City Code was appro- <br />priated amd by. the following vote: Ayes:" smi~h~kinson, Barnes, Leary, Walker, Weiseman <br /> Nays: None <br /> <br /> 61-227 - The following communication from the Chamber of Commerce was presented: <br /> <br />"Please find attached copy of a resolution in supporn of a fire code for the <br />City of Portsmouth which was adopted unanimously by the Board of Directors of the Portsmouth Chamber od Commerce. <br /> Thanking you for your serious consideration of this important matter. <br /> <br /> "WItEREAS, the City of Portsmouth does not have a fire code, and <br /> WHEREAS, the lack Of a fire code has permitted a countless <br /> number of fire hazards in the City to be created through lack of <br /> clearly defined regulations and enforcement, and <br /> WtlEREA$, a fire code of national recommended standards would <br /> set forth fire prevention features for the safety and welfare of <br /> all citizens and define the lines of authority of the City Fire <br /> Department personnel in the enforcement of said standards, and <br /> WHEREAS, the adoption of a nationaliy recommended fire code <br /> by the City of Portsmouth would decrease the nn~nber of penalty <br /> points on the next inspection of the City by the Fire Underwriters, <br /> and <br /> WHEREAS, the number of penalty points determines the classz- <br /> ~fication of a City which in turn. has a bearing on the fire insurance <br /> rates for a city, and <br /> WHEREAS, with the upgrading of our fire alarm system and by <br /> adopting a fire code, it is hopeful that Portsmouth would qualify <br /> for a lower classification. <br /> NOW= THEREFORE= BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Directors <br /> of the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce does hereby recommend co <br /> the City Council of Portsmouth the adoption, of a nationally <br /> recommended fire code. <br /> This the 24 day of July, 1961." <br /> <br /> <br />
