38: <br /> <br />August 13, 1963 <br /> <br />November 13, <br /> <br /> The closing of said street has been approved by the Planning Commission of <br />1962. <br /> Your favorsb{e consideration of this matter will be greatly pp eclated. <br /> <br />the City of Portsmouth on <br /> <br />Motion of Mr. Dillon to refer to the City Attorney was adopted, without dissenting vote. <br /> <br />was read: <br /> <br />63-199 -~The following communication from Young Democratic Club of Portsmouth and Nortol~ County <br /> <br /> "The Young Democratic Club of Portsmouth has observed with keen interest the program adopted by the <br />'City of Portsmouth ih'regard to the institution of a Youth Cor~s~ The City Council or-Portsmouth is ~o be <br />commended for being the forerunner in such a worthy program. Our Organization has noted the wonder}ul effects that <br />this program has had both upon the boys participating zn it and upon the City as s whole. There are many good <br />effects from this program, the most obvious of which are the opportunity.given To the boys to have a source of <br />income and to be occupied with useful employment and in add±tion,~ it has enabled the-City of Portsmouth to improve <br />its physical appearance and develop its municipal facilities. <br /> Our club is unanimously on record as endorsing in full this project and in urging the City Council <br /> to continue this program in subsequent years by expanding the same if at all possible and practicable. <br /> Our organizatio~ has instructed me to write this letter to you and to send a-copy of the same ~o <br />the Norfolk-Virginian Pilot in the hope that this' program may receive u~animous~-public support, and that the City <br />Council~may receive commendation for its program in behalf of the youth of the City." <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr.:Knight to receive with thanks, was adopted, without dissenting vo~e~ <br /> <br /> ~200 - The following resolution from the Portsmouth Juhior Chamber~of Commerce was presented and <br />on motion of Mr. Eastes, received, with thanks: <br /> <br /> "WHEREAS, the Portsmouth Junior Chamber of Commerce, ever cognizant of the need~ of the City of <br />Portsmouth, cite that an effective renewal project is st present lacking in the city; and <br /> WHEREAS, there is e~plicit need for a renewal program specifically in 'the area between the U. S. <br />Naval Hospital and the U. S. Naval Shipyard; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Portsmouth City Planning Commission has-advanced such.a proj'ect in UOperation AmidshipS'; <br />be it therefore <br /> RESOLVED, that the Portsmouth Junior Chamber of Commerce does hereby endorse alt siE phases of <br />'~pera~iou ~midships"; and be it further <br /> RESOLVED, that-th~ Honorable Council ofthe~City of Portsmouth be ~encouraged-to expedite these six <br />facets of the program; and be it further <br /> RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be presented to the City Planning Commission, The City <br />Manager, and the City Council of Portsmouth." <br /> <br />On mo~ion ad~our~ed~ <br /> <br />· City~ Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
