<br />"WHEREAS,~ this Council has accepted wfth regrez the resignation of ~ S. Atkinson from the office

<br />Wt{EREAS, ii has b.ecome necessary for theL said.C.S. Atkinson 5o move from this Ci.ty because, of $
<br />change in his empleyment; and
<br />WHEREAS, in the course of three years service ss Councilman, he gave unstintingly of his time smd
<br />energy to make this a better City in which to live.
<br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLBED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, that the
<br />appreciation for the services rendered by C. S. Atkinson and the best wishes for his success ~n his
<br />new undertaking be expressed and conveyed to the said C. S. Atkinson on behalf of the citizens of
<br />Portsmouth.
<br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of these resolutions be spread upon the minutes of the City
<br />Council, and a copy be presented To the said C. S. Atkinson."

<br />This is a ~r~sclution of respect and appreciation to Mr~ E, C. Wright, Jr.., deceased m~mber of the

<br />On ~otion of Mr. Knight, the following resolution w~s accepted with a rising silent vo~e:

<br />"W~EREAS~ Almighty 'God has seen fit 5o extend t~ Edwin C, Wrighl, Jr., an invitation ~o enjoy
<br />eternal life with Him:in that house not made with hands; and
<br />WHEREAB~ a~ the time of kis. dealth Edwin C. W~ig~tj ~r., was serving as a member of the School
<br />Board of the City of PQrtsmouth and was an active force ~n the religious, civic, and fraternal
<br />life of this City; and
<br />Wt~REAS~. the community,aS ~uf~fered a grea~ loss~in the. untimely psssing of Edwin C. Wright, Jr.,
<br />and has joined with his family and friends in courning his death and in recognizing the worth of
<br />his accomplishments
<br />NOW, THErmoPhORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, that the
<br />s~pathy of this. body, acbi~g.for~the citizens of this City, be and hereby is ex~ended to the
<br />family of the late Edwin C. Wright, Jr.
<br />BE IT FURTHER RE~OLVED that these resolutions be spread upon the minutes of the Council and that

<br /> 64-226 - "I submit the attached resolution and recommend its adoption. This authorizes condemna-
<br />tion proceedings for land for ~QOnstruction of a new junior high school at Elmhurst Lane and Cherokee Road.
<br /> A p~ortion of tt~e land is also to be used for the extension of Elmhurs~ Lan~ ~o Airline. Boulevsrd
<br />and the straighting of Cherokee Road.
<br /> This condemnation covers the balance of the property that the City ~ss been unable 5o purchase."

<br /> "WHEREAS, the Planning Commission of the City of Portsmouth and this Council have determined .that

<br /> (a) Provision of a new school site, with adjoining pi~yground and recreational areas, at~Elmhurst
<br /> Lane and Cherokee Road;
<br /> ~b) ~x%ension of Etmhurst Lane from its intersection with ~herokee Road ~o the end of Elm Lane
<br /> just north of Brunswick Road:
<br />(c). RelDcation and improvement of Cherokee Road between Elmhurs~ Lane and City Rark Avenue; and
<br /> WHEREAS, th~ Qity.Qf Portsmouth has not been able to acquire by purchase aiL.of the proper~y
<br /> necessary .zo carry ou~ ssid p~oj.ect$,~lei~ther b.eca~se of an .inability ~o agree with the Qwners thereof as ~o the
<br /> purchase, price% or because of the incapacity of one or more of the owners thereof, oE because one or more of the
<br /> owners thereof is unable To convey legal title [o such property or in unknown or cannot with reasonable diligence
<br /> be found within the State of Virginia.
<br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia:
