66-29 - The following letter from Mrs. Helen E. Mawhinney was read:

"I do':;not know to whom I should write regarding this matter, but I
am wondering why a city the size of Portsmouth has to put up with such horrible bus service!
Why do people commuting to work.at 8:45 a.m. have to pay 20¢ to ride in
a bus with no heat in 26~ temoerature (outside), with all of the stuffing coming out of the seats, with
a filthy fl~'~rt-~t looks lik~ it hasn't been swept in two weeks, and with most of the windows cracked,
plus the fact that the step is so high you almost have to chin yourself on ~he bar inside to get into
the thing? I feel sorry for elderly people and people with short legs (mine are not) who have to try ~o
clamber onto these monstrosities every morningin order to get out to make their living.
I think~the Community Motor Bus Company should stop calling this bus
service, and I do not think they should be allowed to get away with it. You can ride all the way to Norfolk
for 10~ and you can't ridb up t~gh Street for less than 20¢. I think you should at least be able to go
from The Famous to Sears Roebuck for 103, for example.
Progressive Portsmouth should do something about this situation. I
have already written to the Community Motor Bus Company with a c~'ytoT-~ld Grouch (last week), but
nothing has changed. Someone told me that Mr. Barnes just doesn't care."
"P. S. They never have an~e~-~hedules when you ask for them,
and furthermore, as you know, they are curtailing the service to once eyery two homrs in the evening after
January 23. They are going backwards instead of forwards."

Motion of Mr. Knight to refe~ to the City Manager with request that he
confer with the Community Motor Bus Company and make a report to the Council, was adopted.
