May 24, 1966 <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Johnson that the report be received as information, <br />was adopted, without dissenting vote. <br /> 66-134 - The following letter from Mrs. Wattle Belle Phelps of the <br />Mid-City Garden Club was ready <br /> "The Mid-City Garden Club requests permission to appear and speak <br />before the City Council at its session in two weeks. <br /> If permission be granted? Will you notify by mail Mrs. W. E. Rockley, <br />President Mid-City Garden Club, 3309 Winchester Drive, Westhaven Park?" <br /> ~%e following response fmom Mayor Smith was read: <br /> <br /> "The letter from Mrs. Wattle Belle Phelps, your Recording Secretary, <br /> has been referred to this office. <br /> Your request to speak to the City Council at the meeting on May 24 <br /> is granted and an invitation is extended to your membership and your friends to attend with you. <br /> I hope you will find it pleasing and convenient to attend all <br /> of your City Council meetings. The progress of this city depends upon your loyalty and support." No one appeared to speak. <br /> <br /> 66-13S - Motion of Mr. Johnson that the City Manager request the Director <br /> of Division of Corrections, Department of ~elfare and Institutions, W. K. Cunningham, Jr., to make mn <br /> immediate and complete investigation of the operation of the Portsmouth City Jail and the recent escape <br /> of prisoners therefrom, was adopted, without dissenting vote. <br /> <br /> 66-156 - Motion df Mr. Eastes that the City Manager investigate the possibilit~ <br />of establishing a boat ramp at the northwest' tip of the City Park, where the fill has been extended close <br />to deep-water, and that a report be given at the next Council meeting, was, adopted, without dissenting vote. <br /> 66-157 - Motion of Mr. Johnson that the Health Department make an inspection <br />of the Cherokee Road area where the recent tragedy occurred and that all property owners in that vicinity <br />be required to have their lots cleaned immediately, was adopted, without dissenting vote. <br /> <br />On motion adjourned. <br /> <br />Approved - <br /> <br />President <br /> <br /> <br />
