i~06 June 23. 1998 <br /> <br />Ayes: Benn, Clemons, Griffin, Martin, Pitts, Robinett, Hoiley. <br />Nays: None <br /> <br />98-151 <br /> <br />Adoption of a motion to transfer $125,587 from the Grants <br />Contingency Account to fund the USDA Summer Food Program <br />award. <br /> <br />RECOMMEND_ATION: <br /> <br />· Adoption of a motion to transfer $125,587 from the Grants Contingency <br /> Account to fund the USDA Summer Food Program. <br /> <br />PURPOSE AND NEED: <br /> <br />The program will provide free, nutritious meals during the summer to <br />youth who are economically disadvantaged, while providing wholesome <br />recreational, educational and cultural programs. <br /> <br />· The program will serve breakfast and lunch to 2,495 children at twelve <br /> locations from June 29 through August 6, 1998. <br /> <br /> Motion by Mr. Martin, and seconded by Mr. Griffin, to transfer <br />$125,587 from the Grants Contingency Account to fund the USDA Summer <br />Food Program, and was adopted by the following vote: <br /> <br />Ayes: Berm, Clemons, Griffin, Martin, Pitts, Robinett, Holley <br />Nays: None <br /> <br />- NEW BUSINESS - <br /> <br />98-t52 Boards and Commissions: <br /> <br />· There were no appointments. <br /> <br />98-153 Items Submitted by Council Members: <br /> <br />Mr. Benn said that Council's proactive approach to the military in this <br />City is paying off. The military knows that we care about them and they <br />love it, and they love the Mayor and the City. <br /> <br />Mr. Pitts commented that he was extremely disappointed that Sentinel <br />has apparently reneged on the promise to tear down the former Smith <br />and Welton building at Mid-City. Mr. Pitts asked the City Manager to <br />comment on the future of Mid-City. <br /> <br />Mr. Massie stated that he would confer with staff and come back <br />to Council in the month of July with a recommendation on the <br />future of Mid-City. <br /> <br />· Mayor Holley acknowledged Mr. Pitts as being nominated and elected as <br /> First Vice President of the Virginia Transportation Association. <br /> <br />98-154 Non-Agenda Speakers: <br /> <br />1. Raleigh HarsleY, 2'124 Peach Street, spoke in opposition to the <br /> demolition of 1424 Elm Avenue. <br /> <br />2. William COpeland, 2701 Staunton Avenue, spoke in opposition to the <br /> demolition of 1424 Elm Avenue. <br /> <br /> <br />
