November 22, 1966

-NBW BUSINESS-

66- - The following letter from J. P. C. Hanbury, of Williams and Tazewell and
Associates, was read, and on motion of Mr. King, received as information:

"I am writing to express my personal opposition to any plan to turn over land in the
Fort Nelson Redevelopment area to recreation, This loca~ion, in my opinion, is remote from the area
in need of open park and play areas and isolated. Such a location without neighborhood supervision
and control could easily, in its isolation, become a gathering place for activities of an undesirable
nature. I remember all too well the use of and general condition of the Washington Street
playground which was not maintAined~ not supervised, and generally i~lored by the City of Portsmouth.

Recent petitions for play areas do~mtown have received my support and endorsement.
These areas should serve a particular neighborhood and the residents therein. Hopefully~ the
Old Town conservation plan and the plan for Park View will provide adequate areas for recreation
in this part of the City.'-'

On motion adjourned,

Approved

President

City Clerk
