405 <br /> <br />February 14~ 1967 <br /> <br />NEi't BUSINESS <br /> <br />67-32 - ~e following communication from John E. Adams was read: <br /> <br /> "During the last fifteen months ill health has compelled me to spend a total of eleven <br />weeks in hospitals and to undergo surgery three times. These and the periods of rehovery made <br />it impossible for me tb properly fulfill the requirements of a board member of the Portsmouth <br />schools. <br /> Because of th~§sand the necessity to curtail my activities in the future for an <br />tmde~ermined length of time, Ii,hereby submit ny resignation as a me~oer of the Portsmouth <br />School Board, effective immediately. <br /> It has been a pleasure to serve on the school board, and I regret these conditions bring <br />about my need to resign." <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Barnes to accept the resignation withrregrets and that the matter of a replacement <br />be referred to a conference, and that a letter of thanks be sent to Mr. Adams for his semwice on the <br />School Board, was adopted, without dissenting vote. <br /> <br /> 67-53 - The reoort from Division of Corrections, Department of ~elfare and Institutions on <br />the lockup of the C~tyoof Portsmouth was presented, and on motion of Mr. Knight~ received as <br />information. <br /> <br />67-34 - The following communication from Capt. Bernard L. Berry was read: <br /> <br /> "Please accept this as my application for the oosition of Justice of the Peace for the <br />City of Portsmouth. <br /> I am retiring from the Portsmouth Police Department as of March 1, 1967 and feel that I <br />could be an asset to the Ci%y of Portsmouth if appointed to the Justice of Peace position. <br /> I have been a member of the police department for twenty years, and have been Captain <br />of Detectives for the past three and one half years. I?feeI as though this police ~xoerience <br />would qualify me as a capable holder of the office. <br /> Any consideration given me would be greatly appreciated." <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. King that this application be filed withcothers on the standing list, was <br />adopted, without dissenting vote. <br /> <br /> 67-55 - The following communication from Jerry L, Gwaltney, Advisor, Young Citizens Council <br />was read: <br /> "The Portsmouth Young Citizen's Council has been asked by a number of young citizens of our <br />community to ~ake som~ action to help rid our city of unsightly trash and other eyesores in our city. <br /> On December 19, 1966, the council passed a proposal by Councilman Paula Smith that the <br />council "recommend to City council stricter enforcement of littering laws." This recommendation is one <br />of nine that was made by Miss Smith. <br /> The-Young Citizen's Council s~ands ready to take any action or recommendation necessary to <br />assist you in alleviating this condition. <br /> I have been instructed by the council to fo~ard this recommendation to our City Council. <br /> Your attention in this matter will be greatly appreciated," <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Knight to ~efer to a conference of Council and that a copy of the letter be sent <br />to the Beautification Committee of the Chamber of Commerce, was adopted, without dissenting vote. <br /> <br /> 67-56 - The following communication from Jerry L. G~altney was read: <br /> VAt the regular meeting of the Portsmouth Young Citizen's Council on Monday, February 6, 1967, <br />the council received a letter concerning facilities available to the citizens of Portsmouth for <br />recreation use. <br /> Enclosed is a copy of the letter received by the council and the following recom.~endation <br />from the Young Citizen's Council: <br /> [I) Instruct the Recreation Advisory Board and Schoo] Board to seek improvements-to this <br />situation ~n joint meetings. <br /> (2) Make new arm, ory available for league use, <br /> (3) Respectfully asks counciI to l~ok into the possibility of a new combined gym and <br />recreation center building. <br /> (4) Asks that school gy.~unasiums be available for general recreation use with supervision. <br /> I have been instructed by the Young Citizen's Council to forward this material to City Council. <br /> Your attention in this matter' will be greatly appreciated." <br /> <br /> "The Portsmouth Young Citizen's Council f6els that some explanation should be made in regard~ to the <br />letter frowarded to council conc~~n~ng the lack of recreation facilit%es for the citizens of Portsmouth. <br /> }~%ile conferring with Mr. Cary R. Warren, Assistant Director of R¢creatlon, we have been informed <br />that there are eighty-one teams participating in the basketball program. Forty-two of these te~ms are <br />playing in the Harry Hunt Gymnasium; the Crado~k High School Gym is used for 3 games on Saturday nights <br />only. <br /> Mr, Warren received inquiries about a women's league and an older male adult league but could not <br />accom~.odate these teams due to the lack of facftities, In addition there are limited facilities <br />available for oractices. <br /> All J. Mapp Jr. High School has not been available to this department this year, The old Cradock <br />Jr. High Gym is in disrepair and virtually unuseabte. <br /> Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter." <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Barnes to acknowledge receipt of this letter and that all items mentioned be referred <br />to lhe Recreation Advisory Board, efcept the condition of the gymnasium in the old Cradock Jr. High <br />School, was adopted, without dissenting vote. <br /> <br /> <br />
