98-168 Items Submitted byCounciiMembers <br /> <br />Mr. Berm spoke on the U.S.S. Thorn, one of our Portsmouth destroyers <br />who hosted the Officers of the French ship deGrasse last evening. He <br />stated that the Frenchmen were impressed with the strong relationship <br />that the Destroyer Squadrons enjoy with the City of Portsmouth, <br />especially that Mayor Holley and Vice Mayor Griffin were in attendance <br />and so supportive. Our efforts with the military are becoming well <br />recognized here and now many have crossed the Atlantic Ocean. <br /> <br />Mr. Whitehurst questioned the status of Safety Town; he expressed his <br />desire that the City of Portsmouth achieve designation as the City with <br />the highest percentage of registered voters; and, he spoke of his <br />satisfaction with how informal departmental briefings have been that he <br />has attended. <br /> <br />Mr. Pitts spoke of his desire to have some type of screening in front of <br />dumpsters in the Midtown area; he asked the City Manager to develop a <br />method to control boarded buildings in commercial zones; and, he <br />complimented the City on the tax auction of property at 4404 West <br />Norfolk Road. <br /> <br />Mr. Massie to provide requested information to City Council in the <br />month of August. <br /> <br />98-169 Non-Agenda Speakers <br /> <br />Helen Persons, 1314 Green Street, spoke on the condition of the <br />Ebenezer Parsonage on Effingham Street and on demolition of the <br />Smith and Welton building at Mid-City. <br /> <br />Mr. Oksman recommended City Council not respond to Ms. Person <br />due to her pending lawsuit against the City. <br /> <br />Mr. Moody asked the City Manager about possible options for Mid- <br />City. <br /> <br />* Mr. Massie said he would provide requested information at City <br /> Council's retreat in August. <br /> <br />2.
