May 9~ 1967 <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Knight to acknowledge the letter with thanks and that the matter be included in the <br /> Manager's study of model city, was adopted, without dissenting vote. <br /> 67-154 - The following letter from the Director of Planning was read: <br />~--~ "At its regular monthly meeting on May 2, 1967, the City Planning Commission during an advertised <br /> public hearing reconsidered rezoning petition Z-67-8 from Mrs. Bonnie Sutton relative to a 50-foot <br /> lot on the northeast corner of Peach Street and George Washington Highway. <br /> This matter was discussed publicly and at length with the applicant. The Commission resolved <br /> unanimo~ly to stand by its stated opinion that this petition should be denied for reasons presented <br /> to City Council in March." <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Johnson to concur in the recommendation~of the Planning CoF~ission to deny rezoning <br /> petition Z 67-8 was adopted, without dissenting vote. <br /> <br /> 67-155 - The following letter from the Portsmouth School Board was read: <br /> <br />"The terms of the following three School Board Members expire on July 1, 1967: <br /> Mrs. A. P. Hopewell <br /> Mr. Binford M. Hutchins <br /> Mr. Vernon E. Wimbrough" <br /> <br />Motion of Mr. Johnson to refer to a conference of Council, was adopted, without dissenting vote. <br /> <br />67-156 - The following letter from D. J. Alonge, 3207 GeoDge Washington Highway, was read: <br /> <br /> "I request to be placed on the agenda of your council meeting, Tuesday, May 9, 1967, to make <br />an appeal for the additional hour for beer sales. I am owner and operator of the Rustic Inn, in Portsmouth. <br /> Please notify if you are able to place me upon the agenda." <br /> <br />On motion of Mr. Johnson, rules were suspended to hear from the following: <br /> D. J. Alonge <br /> Jim Thornton <br /> Phillip Boyette <br /> Julia Cooke <br /> John Joanna <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Smith that the A. B. C. Board be requested to extend the time for sale of beer and <br />wine to 1:00 A. M., during the daylight savings time, was adopted, without dissenting vote. <br /> <br /> 67-157 - The following letter from Captain W. S. Vaughn, U. S. Coast Guard Commanding Office~, <br />was read: <br /> <br /> "It is with considerable regret that I must sub. mit my resignation as a member of the Board of <br />Directors of the Portsmouth Coast Guard Museum, Incorporated. <br /> This action is made necessary by my retirement from active duty from the U. S. Coast Guard on <br />May $1, 1967 upon reaching the compulsory retirement age of 62. <br /> Mrs. Vaughn and I are presently planning to return to our home area in Connecticut sometime this <br />coming summer. I suggest an effective date of the resignation as May 15, 1967. <br /> Out biggest regret resulting from this move will be leaving so many, many wonderful friends we <br />have had the pleasure of knowing during my three years while stationed at the Coast Guard Base, <br />Portsmouth, Virginia. <br /> It has been a distinct pleasure and honor to serve on the Museum Board and I sincerely hope the <br />Museum will prove to be everything we on the Board are hoping for it." <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Knight that the resignation be accepted with regret and that an appropriate letter be <br />sent to Captain Vaughn, thanking him for his service on the Board, was adopted, without dissenting vote. <br /> <br />On motion adjourned. <br /> <br />APPROVED - <br /> <br />President <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
