August 8, 1967 <br /> <br /> "Captain William S. Vaughn of the United States Coast Guard had previously submitted his <br />letter of resignation because of his pending reiirement from the Coast Guard. Since that date, <br />Captain Vaughn has decided to make Portsmouth his ~ermanent residence. <br /> ' washes to request that <br /> The Beard of Directors of the Portsmouth Coast Guard Museum , Inc. ~ <br />Caotain Vaughn be permitted to withdraw his resignation if the same has not been acted upon, and <br />ii'action has already been taken, we wish to request the City Council to ~tect him as a Director. <br /> We would appreciate favorable action in this regard." <br /> <br />Motion of Mr. Barnes io go into the election of a member of the Coast Guard Museum Board. <br /> <br />Mr. King nominated Capt. William S. Vaughn. <br /> <br /> On motion of Mr. Knight, nominations were closed. <br /> <br /> Vote being taken, Captain Vaughn was re-instated as z member of the Portsmouth Coast Guard <br />Museum Board, for a three-year term, expiring Janua~/ S1, 1970. <br /> <br /> 67-2S9 - The following letter from R; L. Davis was read: <br /> <br /> "I sincerely appreciate the honor you bestowed upon me several months ago in asking me to serve <br />on the Parking Commission. However I Hope my resignation will be accepted for the following reasons: <br /> I find that business is taking me out of to~zn a great deal as a consequence I am not in the <br />city when the Parking ComMission meets and therefore feel that I am not d~ing the job for the <br />Commission thmt could be done if I were in the city at the time of each meeting. Also I do <br />feel that someone who is more closely connected with the down town situations such as redevelopment <br />and parking would be more ably suited for serving on this Cormittee. <br /> I am an ardent believer in Portsmouth and it's future as one of the outstanding cities <br />of the ~pper Southeast and would welcome the ~pportunity of being of assistance in any way <br />which might involve manufacturing or industrialization as this has been my business interest for <br />the past thirty-five years. <br /> It is with regret that I offer my resignation but I do feel that some other individual would <br />be more suitable for this appointment." <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Barnes that the resignation be accepted with regre~s and that a letter expressing <br /> appreciation for his services be sent Mr. Davis, was adopted, without dissenting vote. <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Johnson to go into the election of a successor to Mr. Davis was adopted, without dissenting <br /> vote. <br /> <br />Mr. Johnson nSminated D. W. Culpepper to fill the vacancy on the Parking Authority. <br /> <br />On motion of Mr. Knight, nominations were closed. <br /> <br /> Vote being taken, Mr. Culpepper was elected a member of the Parking Authority for a term of <br />five years, expiring May t, 1972. <br /> <br /> 67-240 - Motion of Mr. Hastes to refer the matter of closing streets leading to the water to the <br />Planning Commission for advice and guidance. <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Barnes to amend the motion to include Closing of all streets, was adopted, without <br />dissenting~ vote. <br /> <br />Vote being taken, the amended motion was adopted, without dissenting vote. <br /> <br />On motion adjourned. <br /> <br />APPROVED - <br /> <br /> <br />
