<br />SIX NEM SECTIONS NUMBERED 18-117, 18-117.1, 18-117.2, 18-117.5, 18-117.4, and 18-t17.S, M~KING
<br />ONE-WAY STREETS OF PORTIONS OF HILL AVENUE JACKSON STREET, PINNERS AVENUE, SEABOARD AVENUE
<br />AND SOUTHERN AVENUE"

<br />On motion of Mr. Barnes, action was deferred.

<br />-NEW BUSINESS-
<br />
<br />67-287 - The following petition from residents of Mt. Hermon Section, was read:
<br />
<br /> "The Mt. Hermon section of the city df Portsmouth is one of the oldest residential sections
<br />in the city, yet we, the home owners and tax payers, find many. of our streets are without
<br />sidewa/ks, curbstones, gutters, and hard surfaces. We would like for our section of the
<br />city to be included in the Model City Program that the city i~ looking forward to,
<br /> We are willing and ready to help change the appearance of this section from the eye-sore
<br />it is today, to a beautiful site that will attract thosa who visit or live in this area.
<br /> Therefore, we the undersigned to earnestly b~tiev~ that our community can have a new
<br />took, if the city would repair or provide it with:
<br />
<br />1. Repair the sidewalks, gutters, and curbstones in the 1300 and 1400 blocks of Mt. Vernon
<br /> Avenue .... ctYrbi~lg is one inch lhick instead of from four to six inches as it should be.
<br />2. Provide sidewalks, curbstones and gutters in the 1500 block of Mt. Vernon Avenue
<br />$. Provide sidewalks, curbstones, gutters, and proper drainage for standing water in .the
<br /> 1400 and 1500 blocks of Wool Avenue, the 2800 and 2900, and 5000 blocks of County
<br /> Streets---(standing water has bad odor, unhealtP/and after a big rain is a menace to
<br /> traffic).
<br />4. Since 5~. Vernon Avenue, Wool Avenue, and County Street, are used as a thoroughfare by
<br /> many people, going to and from work, these streets should be resurfaced and legeled---
<br /> street so unlevel that the homes are shaken at the passing of any car or truck.
<br />
<br /> We, the undersigned, are asking that these items be given your attention and consideration
<br />as early as possible.

<br /> Motion of Mr. Knight to refer to the City Manager for a report to the Council, was adopted,
<br />without dissenting vote.

<br />67-288 - The following letter from the Snnerintendent of Scho61s was read:
<br />
<br /> "The School Board at i~s regular meeting on September 14, 1967, adopted the following
<br />resolution:
<br /> RESOLVED: The School Board sincerely appreciates the City Counci] acquiring the land
<br />adjacent to the Thomas Jefferson School. The purchase and demolition of the last house will
<br />enable the School Board to enlarge the physical education instructiona! spaces for the
<br />children enrolled in Thomas Jefferson School. Furthermore, this additional land will provide ~he
<br />Recreation Department with a g~eatly needed area for after school programs as well as space for
<br />the summer recreational activities."
<br />
<br />Motion of M~. Knight to receive as information was adopted, without dissenting vote.
<br />
<br />67-289 - The following letter from the Olive Branch Elementary School was read:
<br />
<br /> "The Executive Board of the Olive Branch Parent-Teacher Association wishes to bring to your
<br />attention the need for curbing and drainage in the Olive Branch Area.
<br /> In bad weather, the children are forced to walk in the middle of the streets to keep out of
<br />the water. This presents a very dangerous situation for the motorist and the children walking to and from
<br />school.
<br /> We would appreciate your attention concerning this problem in our area as the people are most
<br />concerned. Looking forward to your reply."
<br />
<br /> Motion of Mr. Johnson that the City Manager investigate and report his ~indings to the Council,
<br />and that the Clerk so inform ~rs. Rhodes, was adopted, without dissenting vote.
