Motion of Mr. Barnes that the question of filling the vacancies on the Board be referred to a conference
of Council, was adopted, without dissenting vote.
68-164 - The follow,nE letter from L. David Lindauer was read:
"As you are all aware, the Portsmouth Kiwanis Club has a very real interest in the conditions in the
Southside or Newtown area of the City of Portsmouth. It is our understanding that at a recent conference
between the Wesley Community Center Board and the Portsmouth City Council, it was decided that a coordinator
should be elected by the City Council to act as a liaison between the area and the City government. The
Wesley Community Center, being very actively involved in this area, was asked to assist in the selection of
such a coordinator.
The Portsmouth Kiwanis Club~ at the regular meeting of its Board of Directors, on Hay 7, 1968, unanimousl
endorsed the position of the Youth Services Cor~ittee in a desire to render whatever assistance may be possibl
in the selection of a coordinator.
Our Committee feels that it would be advantageous if such a meeting were held in the Jefferson Elementary
School, either under the sponSorh~D of the school or under the joint sponsorshi~ of the Wesley Community
Center, the Portsmouth Kiwanis Clu~~ and ~ny other organizations which may be interested in sponsoring the
same. At this meeting, an effort would be made to have representation from the neighborhood itself, so that
the people might have a part in selecting the coordinator.
In addition, it would seem that an advisory committee, possibly consisting of representatives from each
of the snonsoring organizations, might be set up to work with the coordinator. This would have a very
obvious ~dvantage in that some of the problems might be handled and solved by Drivate agencies without re-
quiring the City to take any action. ~
We wish to tender our services in any way that we can to assist in selecting the coordinator which would
be a~pointed by the Portsmouth City Council."
~otion of ~r. Barnes to refer to a conference was adopted, without dissenting vote.

On motion adjourned.

APPROVED -

President

City Clerk

"RESOLUTION REQUESTING THE PORTS~]OUTH REDEVELOP~ENT AND HOUSING AUTHORITY TO CONSIDER POSSIBLE
MODIFICATIONS OF THE OLDE TOWNE CONSERVATION PROJECT, PROJECT NO. VA. R-49.
WHEREAS, on May 14, 1968, the Council of the City of Portsmouth and the Commissioners of the Portsmouth
RedeveloDment and Housing Authority held a public hearing in the City Council Chmmbers on the Olde Towne
Conserva{ion Project No. Va.
