1969 <br /> <br />- NBT¢ BUSINESS - <br /> <br />69-65 - The following letter from tRe Johnny Davis Memorial Foundation, Inc. was read: <br /> <br /> "Enclosed you will find information concerning a canine center which is to be constructed in the Tidewater <br />area. This center being the first of its Rind in the United States, the Board of Directors of the "Johnny <br />Davis Memorial Foundation, Inc.", felt all public officials such as yourself, with the interest of their com- <br />mmnity~ should be informed. <br /> <br /> ?ne Foundation was founded in April of 1968. A great deal of thought and work has gone into it not only <br />from local individuals but from people throughout the United States, and response has been growing. ~nese <br />people are donating their time, services and nonies,.realizing a need for this type of center. <br /> <br /> The 6hamber of Commerce Directors of the following cities have been personally contacted by our President: <br />~Portsmouth, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and Chesapeake, Virginia. ?"ney have shown considerable interest by offer- <br /> ing assistance and the services of their office. <br /> <br /> Mr. Martak of the "Tidewater Better Business Bureau" has also been informed of our project and is notifying <br />his national office. Senator Spong has expressed his interest and was insgrumental in obtaining our tax-free <br />ruling from the Iiternal Revenue Service. <br /> <br /> Plans are in progress for publicity on a national level, and considerable publicity has already gone forth~ <br />locally. <br /> <br /> The Directors would appreciate your reading this letter to the City Council at your next regular meeting <br />and giving each a copy of the enclosed information so they too will be informed of this center. <br /> <br /> We would appreciate any assistance you can give us and will keep you informed as to our progress." <br /> Motion of Mr. Holley to receive as information was adopted, without dissenting vote. <br /> <br /> 69-66 - The following letter from Mrs. Geo. E. Dixon, Sec., Merrifields Garden ~lub was read: <br /> <br /> "The residents of Merrifields are very interested in the proposed city park in the Cr~ney Island area. <br /> <br /> As you know, Portsmouth needs more public park area and especially in the rapidly growing ~hurchland <br />area. <br /> <br /> Now is the time to appropriate the fmnds and land. l~ith the new Junior High being built in the Merrifield: <br />section, this would be a very desirable location for a park. <br /> <br /> The Garden club in Merrifields and I'm sure the Edgefield Garden club would be willing to held in any way <br />possible, such as planning nature trails and plantinR flowers, etc. <br /> <br /> So, we are hoping the council will see fit to go mhead and plan a much needed city park." <br /> Motion of Mr. Johnson to refer to.bUdDer study conference was adopted, without dissenting vote. <br /> 69-67 - ~e following letter from the City Clerk was read: <br /> <br /> "Letters from the following teachers in Portsmouth schools, urging acceptance of the 1969-70 school <br />budget, as presented, have been received: <br /> <br />Mr~ and Mrs. James H~ Holleran <br />Anita M. Richardson <br />Elizabeth R. Shelor <br />Frances Thomas Sledge <br />Doris L. Hoffnagle <br />Anne H. Newbill" <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Eastes to receive as infomnation and refer to the budget study conference was adopted, <br />without dissenting vote. * <br /> <br />69-68 - ~ne following letter from the Edgefield Civic Club was read: <br /> <br /> "Members of the Edgefield Civic Club urge the Honorable City Council to appropriate $15~000.00 for a <br />park to be located near the~errzflelds' ~ Junior High Mchool which is now under construction. <br /> <br /> lie feel that recreational facilities are needed quite desperately in our communityl Please give this <br />matter your utmost consideration." ~ <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Turner to refer to the budget study conference was adopted, without dissenting vote. <br /> 69-69 - The following letter from the Portsmouth Education Association was read: <br /> <br /> "You may receive two letters concerning this since our secretary is out of town, and I do not know if <br />he wrote you. <br /> <br /> Proceeding as we planned in our conference, the Portsmouth Education Association desires to be on the <br />agenda to speak for the school budget on Tuesday, February 25. Thank you very much." <br /> <br /> Mrs. Mary J.
