May 1S, 1969 <br /> <br /> 69-151 - The following letter from Samuel 6. Towmmandwas read: <br /> <br /> "The freeholders and residents living in the area of Hatton Point Road and Riveredge Drive, on Hatton <br />Point, desire and request the installation of a street lighZ at the corner of the above mentioned streets. <br /> <br /> Due to the darkness of the ar~a, a condition further enhanced by trees and a hedgerow, this location pro- <br />vides considerable comfort to undesirables. An electric pole, presently erected at this junction, could be <br />conveniently used as a support for the street light. <br /> <br /> We sincerely trust that our request will receive your Immediate attention." <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Smith that the City Manager be requested to have a light placed at Hatton Point Road and <br />Riveredge Drive was adopted, without dissenting vote. <br /> <br /> 69-152 - The following letter from the City Clerk was read: <br /> <br /> "The term of office of Mr. Richard B. Bartlett on the Commission of Architectural Review will expire on <br />May 14, 1969." <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Pastes to go into the election of a member to the Commission of Architectural Review, was <br />adopted. <br /> <br /> Mr. Smith nominated Richard B. Bartlett to succeed himself on theC6ommission. <br /> <br /> Vote being taken, Mr. Bartlett was elected a member of the Commission of Architectural Review. <br /> <br /> 69-155 - The following letter from the P.T.A. Council was read: <br /> <br /> "The Portsmouth Council of Parents and Teachers Association, Mrs. Thomas Walsh, President, in its annual <br />meeting unanimously voted to ask the members of the City Council to consider the building now imuuse by our <br />Police Department as a future rehabilitation center for juvenile offenders. <br /> <br /> The size and location of this structure can aid our Courts to return misguided delinquents to a ~meful <br />life in our society; through consultation and training. <br /> <br /> This is one of thepprojected goals of our Council whose nmmbership include all the P.T.A.'s in the City <br />of Portsmouth. Our interest include a Half-I{ay house and Zoo for the City of Portsmouth. <br /> <br /> In a recmnt meeting with Mr. William E. Weddington, Assistant Director of Youth Services, Virginia Depart- <br />ment of Welfare and Institutions it came to our attention that the State has funds to help with the financing <br />of such institutions. <br /> <br /> The Portsmouth Council of Parents and Teachers thank you for all consideration in this matter that will <br />benefit the welfare of all our citizens." <br /> <br /> On motion of Mr. Holley, referred to a conference. <br /> <br /> 69-154 - The following resolution was read, and, on motion of Mr. Smith, was adopted: <br /> <br /> "P~SOLUTION CO~NDING THH GRHEN PINE GARDEN CLUB FOR MAKING CERTAIN [MPROVEMENTS TO TH~ <br /> CEDAR LANE FIRE STATION <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Green Pine Garden Club, a voluntary organization of ladies dedicated to the improvement <br />and beautification of the community in which they live, undertook as one of its public service projects the <br />improvement of the Cedar Lane Fire Station-and the working conditions of the men stationed there; and <br /> <br /> ~{EREAS, the members of the Green Pine Garden Club afCe~ expending much personal time and effort were most <br />successful in accomplishing their purpose; and <br /> <br /> ~ER~AS, ~he civic mindedness of these ladies is an inspiration to all the citizens Df Portsmouth. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT R~SOLVED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, that the appreciation <br />of this body for the efforts of the Green Pine Garden Club in improving the appearance of the C~dar Lane Fire <br />Station, be. hereby expressed and conveyed to the members of %he Green Pine Garden C1%~. <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED %~at a copy of this resolution be soread upon the minutes of the Council and a copy <br />hereof be presented to the said Green Pine Garden Club." <br /> <br /> 69-155 - Motion of Dr. Holley to refer to the Planning Commission the question of the feasibility of <br /> closing a paper streot between Washington and Sixth Streets. <br /> <br /> "Washington - S~%" <br /> <br /> Was ado~d with one dissenting vote - Mr. Smith. <br /> <br /> 69-156 - Motion of Mr. Johnson that the City Manager investigate the feasibility of the Wy~he Street play- <br /> ground site for a business complex was adopted, without dissenting vote. <br /> <br /> On motion adjourned. <br /> <br /> APPROVED - <br /> <br />Presidef~t <br /> <br />Depfity City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
