August 12_ 1960 <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. $oknsen to go into the election of a member to the Portsmouth Bond Commission was adopted. <br /> Mr. Johnson nominated Ira E. Price, Vice-President of The Bank of Virginia. <br /> <br /> On motion of Mr. Eas.tes, nominations were closed. <br /> <br /> Vote being taken Mr. Price wasunanimously elected a member of the Portsmouth Bond Commission for the <br /> unexpired term of Mr. Neal,. which term expires March 1, 1971. <br /> <br /> 69-258 - The following letter from the Citizens Advisory Committee was read: <br /> <br /> "At the Citizens Advisory Committee meeting held on August 4, 1969 a presentation of a proposed program <br /> initiated by the Portsmouth Public School System was presented by Mr. T. E. Mas~ers, Jr. This pro,ram entitled <br /> PORTS {Portsmouth Operation Rescue of Teenage Skills) would provide work incentive which would assist our under- <br /> achievers in finding suitable employment and education which would allow them to find their place in our society <br /> After review and consideration, the Citizens Advisory Committee unanimously concurred that we would commend this <br /> program to you 'and urge that all be done in your power to insure its funding and implementation as being in the <br /> best interest of the citizens of the City of Portsmouth. It is further re{uested that you take all necessary <br /> action with the appropriate congressional representatives to seek their assistance in this matter. <br /> <br /> After considering the presentation, it was felt that the request for approximately one hundred seventy <br />thousand dollars L$170,000.00) to implement this program was a just request in view of the urgent need within <br />our City. Thanking you for your assistance in this matter, I remain" <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. King to'commend the Citizens Ad=isletM committee for their efforts in this project, was <br />adopted, without dissentin~ vote. <br /> <br /> 69-259 - The following letter from the Superintendent of Schools was read: <br /> <br /> "The School Board of the City of Portsmouth adopted the following resolution at its regular meeting on <br />Thursday, August 7, 1969: <br /> <br /> The school board respectfully requests p rmlss~on from City Council to apply for, receive and expend funds <br />from the federal, state and other sources not included in 1969-70 sch?eol budget.,, <br /> <br /> Motion of -~r.
