"In accordance with your request I have looked into the matter of the collection and use of Law Library
fees.

According to information which has been fdrnished to me by the clerks of the various courts the following
amounts were collected by each respective court during the fiscal year 1969-1970:

Circuit Court
Court of Hustings
Municipal Court, Civ. Div.

Law Library Fees
$ 998.90
653.00
8,377.50

Total $ I0,028.50

The State enabling legislation and the City ordinance adopted thereunder provides that such funds may be
used to purchase law books and periodicals, for s~laries of librarians and othe~ staff members and for the main-
tenance and acquisition of suitable quarters for such a Public Law Library. Therefore, in my opinion it would
be legal to charge a reasonable rental fee to the Law Library for the use of the space in the Civic Center."

On motion of Mr. Johnson, that the City Manager research the legality of charging rent for court space
