8~ptember 26, 1972

NEW BUSINESS

72-408 The following letter rec61ved from J. P. C. Hanbury, Chairman, Museum and Fine
~rts Commission, was read:

"The Museum and Fine Ar~s Commission at its September monthly meeting requested that I
write to you concerning the proposed disposal of the City owned property nor~R of the Light-
ship Museum. There has been some publicity concerning the possibility of the development
of this site for a restaurant with banquet and modes% convention facilities. The Commission
feels that this property could be, and perhaps should be, developed in this way with the
thought that a great deal of tourist business could be generated by such~a facility and that
this use for the property would be compatible with the adjacent Museums.~

The drawings which have been the object of the recent newspaper coverage indicate that
the entire site is devoted,' to black topped parking and that the restaurant encroaches on
the recently, completed sea wall. It is the Commission's feeling that the development of this
site should take more into account the open green area which now is available at the sea wall
for all the citizens of the City, and further that its location should be one in sympathy
with the location of the City's L~htship Museum. The character of the restaurant itself,
the Commission feels, is not in keeping with the more monumental quality of private and
municipal buildings adjacent to the site.

While the Commission feels that the site could be developed for a restaurant, it feels
that the plan as proposed according to the newspaper is not in the best interest of the site,
the City, or the City owned museums. The Commission hopes that- if and when the property is
to be disposed of and for a mestaurant, that it be made aware of the City's plans in this
direction and that the final plans for the development of the site be made available to the
Commission for their review."

Motion of Mr. Early and seconded by Mr. Johnson, to be received as information was
adopted by the following vote: ,

Ayes: Early, Holley, Johnson, King, Smith Wentz Barnes
Nays: None ' '

72-409 Motion of Mr. Smith and seconded by Mr. Wentz, the report from the Auditor of
Public Accounts of the audit of the Clerk of the Circuit Court for the calendar year 1971,
to be received as information, was adopted by the following vote:

Ayes: Early, Holley, Johnson, King, Smith, Wentz Barnes
Nays: None '

the

72-410 - The following letter from Mrs. G.
