the State Board of Housing to adopt the Southern Standard Building Code, the Southern
Standard Gas Code, the Southern Standard Plumbing Code and the National Electrical Code
as the codes regulating buildings in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The Acts of the Assembly of 1972 directed and empowered the State Board of Housing
to adopt-a Uniform State-wide Building Code. The Board is currently holding public hearings
on this.

We wish to support the above codes since over 40 communities in Virginia use these
codes with all the Tidewater cities using them. With the wide use of the Southern Standard
Codes already in Virginia, a change would require an extensive training program for inspec~
tots throughout the State, creating a burden, especially on many of the small communities
where inspectors sometimes have collateral duties."

On motion of Mr. King and seconded by Mr. Johnson the following resolution was adopted,
and by the following%vote:

'ARESOLUTION REQUESTING THE STATE BOARD OF.HOUSING TO, ADOPT THE SOUTHERN STANDARD
CODES AND THE NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE.
~IEREAS, the Southern Standard Building Code,
the Southern Gas Code, and the National Electrical
Virginia for many years; and

Code have been widely used throughout

PaER/AS, public servants charged with the enforcement of such codes have achieved
a high degree of familiarity with such codes since their promulgation; and

WHEREAS, the merits of these codes have been convincingly eslablished through years
of practical application; and

WHEREAS, the State Board of Housing has the authority to adopt statewide codes regulat-
ing buildings.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia,
that the State Board of Housing be, and:it hereby is, strongly urged to give favorable
