Program." <br /> <br /> On motimn of Mr. Smith and seconded by Mr. Early, the following ordinance was approve <br />on first reading, and by the following vote: <br /> <br />"AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND SECTION 18 OF THE CLASSIFICATION AND PAY PLAN OF THE <br />CITY TO INCREASE THE COMPLEMENT OF THE POLICE DEPARTMENT." <br /> <br />Ayes: Early, Holley, King, Smith, Wentz, Barnes <br />Nays: None <br /> <br /> 73-482 - "I submit the attached resolution requesting the Virginia Department <br />of Highways to approve a project for replacement of the Hodges Ferry Bridge. While <br />the City Council has previously adopted a resolution for this bridge, it did not commit <br />any funds. This commits the City to pay 15% of the engineering cost for the portion <br />of the project constructed within the corporate boundaries of Portsmouth. <br /> <br />basis of a bridge with a vertical <br /> <br />Wentz, the following resolution was <br /> <br /> The Highway Department will proceed on the <br />clearance of 12 feet above mean high water." <br /> <br /> On motion of Mr. Smith and seconded by Mr. <br />adopted, and by the following vote: <br /> <br />"A RESOLUTION REQUESTING THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS TO APPROVE A <br />PROJECT FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF THE HO~GES FERRY BRIDGE AND A PORTION OF <br />STATE ROUTE 357. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Council of the City of Portsmouth has determined that there is a <br />great need for the replacement of the bridge carrying State Route 337 over the western <br />branch of the Elizabeth River (Hodges Ferry Bridge), and the western approach thereto; <br />and <br /> <br /> ~fHEREAS, the structural integrity of said bridge has deteriorated to such an <br />extent that it has become necessary to limit the gross weight on said bridge to eight <br />tons; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the present width of said bridge is inadequate to handle current traffic <br />volumes; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, that portion of State Route 337 to the west of such bridge is also inadequat <br />to..carry current traffic volumes; and <br /> <br /> P, VAEREAS, the Hodges Ferry Bridge and said western aDproach thereto is a vital <br />transportation link for the citizens of Portsmouth in both their travels to Chesapeake <br />and to the Churchland area of Portsmouth; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the proposed extension of Tyre Neck Road from Bruce Road to Portsmouth <br />Boulevard (State Route 337) will further encourage citizens of Portsmouth and Chesapeake <br />to use said bridge; <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of. Portsmouth does <br />hereby request the Virginia Department of Highways to approve a project for the replacemen <br />of the Hodges Ferry Bridge with a modern four-lane span and the reconstruction of <br />State Route 337 from the Hodges Ferry Bridge westward to a point approximately one- <br />tenth of a mile west of Taylor Road. <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that said road reconstruction should consist of a four- <br />lane divided highway with appropriate turning storage lanes at Dock Landing Road and <br />Taylor Road. <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City of Portsmouth shall pay-fifteen percent <br />(t5~) of the cost of those portions of the project constructed within the corporate <br />boundaries of Portsmouth." <br /> <br />Ayes: Early, Holley, King, Smith, Wentz, Barnes <br />Nays: None <br /> <br /> 73-483 "In response to City Council's request, the additional cost to place <br />the~traffic light at Ferguson Drive rather than Amherst Drive amount,s to <br />This is broken down as follows: <br /> <br /> <br />
