209 <br /> <br />January 22~ 1974 <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. <br />unanimous vote. <br /> <br />Respond to derogatory remarks directed bM Councilman Holley to this Petitioner <br />concerning his objections to the proposed changes to civil service sections <br />of the City Charter, said remarks having been made during the 8 January, 1974 <br />meeting after the Petitioner had left the pokium, Council was back in session, <br />and the abovenoted gag rules having prevented such rightful public response.' <br />Walker spoke. <br /> Johnson and seconded by Mr. Smith, to be received, was adopted by <br /> <br /> 74-35 - The following petition received from home-owners and taxpayers of the 300 <br />Block of Taft Drive, was read: <br /> <br /> "We, the undersigned home-owners and taxpayers of the 300 block of Taft <br />to object to the building of a house so close to that of a gas plant that is <br />this community. This house would be a hazard to the community because seven <br />enough distance from the gas plant. <br /> <br />Drive, wish <br />located in <br />feet is not <br /> <br /> We also feel that this house would bring down the value of our property since it <br />so close to the gas plant. In addition, the house~would be in a dangerous position so <br />near the gas plant." Signed Alexander Walke, 303 Taft Drive and others. <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Holley and seconded by Mr. Johnson, that the City Manager received a <br />report from Building Inspector related to what our present laws say about moving of <br />houses in area without any regards to its present standards that those communities enjoy, <br />and the City Attorney look into amending code regarding side lot line and lesser quality <br />houses being permitted to be moved into an area of high quality residences, was adopted <br />by unanimous vote. <br /> <br /> 74-36 - Moti3n of Mr. Smith and seconded by Mr. Johnson, that the Council meet in an <br />executive session prior to the next regularly scheduled Council meeting, for the purpose oi <br /> <br />(1) Discussing appointments to Boards and Commissions. <br />(2) Discussing the disposition of City property. <br />(3) Consultation with Counsel pertaining to legal matters. <br /> <br />was adopted by the following vote: <br /> <br />Ayes: Early, Johnson, King, Smith, Wentz, Barnes <br />Nays: Holley <br /> <br /> 74-37 The following letter received from Joseph Parker, Chairman, Mount Hermon <br />Project Area Committee, was read by Councilman Smith: <br /> <br /> "We, the Mount Hermon Project Area Committee and the Mount Hermon Community League, <br />wish to go on record expressing our feelings in relationship to our City Manager, Mr. A. <br />P. Johnson, Jr. This may come as a shock to you, but we feel th&t the resignation of <br />Mr. Johnson from office should be reconsidered. <br /> <br /> For the past six years it has been our good pleasure to have established a working <br />relationship with him. Not only has he related to us as a people, we feel and consider <br />him as a friend who understands the needs of our community, largely because he was able <br />to relate to us even from an authoritative standpoint. We have a great deal of respect <br />and admiration for Mr. Johnson and feel the City will be losing one who is quali£ied to <br />lead. Again, we urge you to reevaluate his posit~on and take a closer look at accepting <br />his resignation.' <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Smith and seconded by Mr. Johnson, that the letter be made a part of <br />the record, was adopted by unanimous vote. <br /> <br /> 74-38 Motion of Mr. Johnson and seconded by Mr. Early~, that this Council give a <br />standing recognition of honor to the retirement of the City Manager, A. P. Johnaon, Jr., <br />as history will record his great accomplishments and the best we can do is to give our <br />regrets and sorrow of one of the outstanding ~a~agers in the State in the past decade and <br />a half; I so move this be recorded in the minutes of this meeting, was adopted by unanimom <br />vote by all Councilmen standing and applauding. <br /> <br />Motion of Mr. <br /> <br />APPROVED - <br /> <br /> r <br /> <br />King and seconded by Mr. <br /> <br />Holley, the meeting adjourned at 9:05 p.m. <br /> <br /> City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
