Parker, President & Chairman,
Mt. Harmon Community League Project Area Committee, was read:

"This communication is in reference to the Police Community Relations Unit. For
years, residents of any community longed for some type of community protection that was
not so remotely distant, something that all persons could have a personal claim with.
You might not think that this very popular Police Community Relations unit was the
answer, but with the shortmmpers, impatience, and non-relating of some of the law en-
forcement officers, most black communities suffered. Since the origin of the Police
Community Relations unit in the Mt. Hermon area, it is our good pleasure to have estab-
lished a working relationship with ~ny areas of police work, whereby the citizens have
benefited greatly. To a large degree because time and efforts were involved to teach
some of the basics that area citizens need to know and because one of the many problems
that confronted a community, one which had become a serious bone of contention is the
non-relating between police officers and citizens; we just did not relate. Not only were
we considered less than citizens, we were all looked upon as criminals; however thanks
to the foresightedness of the City Council, we have become a close k~itte~group. We
all appreciate each others problems and there mas a great deal of cooperation among
families, particularly if one had an emergency of some kind, and we were able to seek the
advice of the community pb~ice. Ttkis i~ ~3hen The clo~r~ess ~ez~ and continues. We con-
sider ourselves fortunate to such an experience~ re~r~ce aYa~:l&~le to: us.
