3O9 <br /> <br />June 1~, 1974 <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Smith and seconded by Mr. Early, the matter to be tabled indefinitely, <br />was adopted :by unanimous vote. <br /> <br />NEW BUSINESS <br /> <br /> 74-245 - The following letter received from Mrs. Teresa Hagwood, 580 Freedom Avenue, <br />was presented: <br /> <br /> "I'm Mrs. Teresa Hagwood and at the advise of Mr. Ivey, Recreation Dept. Chairman, <br />I am writing to you on behalf of the many concerned parents of our baseball teams, the <br />coaches fans, general public. <br /> <br /> % - <br /> I was privileged to be invited at the Recreation Committee meeting of la~nzght <br />(May 22, 1974). <br /> <br /> I submit to the members of City Council the letter I read at the meeting of the <br />22nd. Mr. Campbell and Mr. Ivey have a cop)- of my letter as well. <br /> <br /> Also, enclosed is a petition of names which was first directed for Mr. Ottavio, <br />who later referred me and our demands to the Recreation Committee. <br /> <br /> Gentlemen, I've learned a few facts about the budget, etc.- but, I <br />give up hope for the cause we urge your help with -- we have waited so <br />lighting of our three ball fields on Elliott Avenue. <br /> <br />simply can't <br />long for the prcper <br /> <br /> Please accept my letter I submit for the members to read with serious consideration. <br />... Give me a definite answer.' <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Johnson and seconded by Mr. Holley, the matter to be referred to the <br />Parks and Recreation Commission for an opinion, was adopted by unanimous vote. <br /> <br />74-246 The following letter from Director of Planning was read: <br /> <br /> "At its regular monthly meeting on June 4, 1974, the City Planning Commission <br />publicly reviewed and resolved to recommend closure of the following paper street: <br /> <br />S-74~6 <br /> <br />Alley approximately 10 feet wide and 125 feet in length between <br />Craford Place and property line of the U.S. Naval Hospital. Holt <br />W. and_Gale H. Butt and Caroline MacKenzie by Attorney Robert C. <br />Barclay, III." <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Smith and seconded by Mr. Johnson, to be referred to the City Attorney <br />for proper handling, was adopted by unanimous vote. <br /> <br />74-247 The following letter from Director of Planning was read: <br /> <br /> "At its regular monthly meeting on June 4, 1974, the City PI.arming Commission <br />publicly reviewed and resolved to recommend closure of the following paper street: <br /> <br />S-74-7 <br /> <br />Alley approximately 26 feet wide and located approximately 112 feet <br />west of the southwest corner of Leckie Street and Peninsula Avenue <br />and extending south 120 feet. Mrs. J. R. Austin, Mrs. C. C. Williams <br />and Frank B. Baker, Jr., by Attorney L. Garland Wells." <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Smith and seconded by Mr. Early, to be referred to the City Attorney <br />for proper handling, was adopted by unanimous vote. <br /> <br /> 74-248 - The following letter requesting permission for 7epresentative to speak <br />from Alvertus Tyler, President, Southside Neighborhood Assembly, was presented: <br /> <br /> "The Southside Neighborhood Assembly hereby requests that a representative of it's <br />organization in the person of Mr. Ernest Hardy address the City Council at it's next <br />regular meeting concerning the possible lease of the Lincoln Street Fire Station (Lincoln <br />and Gordon Street) for a work training project of the Assembly.' <br /> <br />Representative did not answer to name when announced. <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Holley and seconded by Mr. Smith, to be referred to the City Manager <br />to report back at a meeting during the month of ~uly, 1974, was adopted 6-1 (Smith abstain <br />lng). <br /> <br /> 74-249 - Motion of Mr. Holley and seconded by Mr. Johnson, the following resolution <br />was adopted by the following vote: <br /> <br />"A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING THE VIGOROUS OPPOSITION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE <br />CITY OF PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA, TO ANY CONSTRUCTION OF MILITARY HOUSING <br />ON THE WILLIAMS COURT TRACT. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the 8. S. Navy is presently considering plans to place several <br />hundred units of military housing at the St. Julien's Creek site; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the City of Chesapeake has advanced the proposal that such housing be <br />relocated to another site~ possibly the former Williams Court land; and <br /> <br /> <br />
