Purpose and Need: · This mentoring program addresses several of the risk factors identified in the City of Portsmouth Comprehensive Prevention Plan including family history of high-risk behaviors in non-traditional households. · The mentoring program will touch upon the four areas of a child's environment that includes community, family, school, and individual/peer. This will be achieved by promoting a strong bond between youth and pro-social adults, development of positive social orientation, and the development of healthy beliefs and community standards. · Mentoring is one of the five promises of the national America's Promise initiative which Portsmouth committed to as a City of Promise. Financial Impact: · This is a reimbursable grant with match to be provided through in-kind services. These funds will be used for firefighter safety by updating protective clothing, purchasing fire fighting equipment and the training of fire fighters. Recommendation: · Adoption of a motion to transfer $147,572 from the Grants Contingency Account for Fire Protection Services. Purpose and Need: · The City has received the Fiscal Year 2001 Fire Program Funds allocation from the Virginia Department of Fire Programs. · This allocation will be used for firefighter safety by updating protective clothing, purchasing fire fighting equipment and the training of firefighters.
