DeLacy Stith, 605 Green Street, representing Portsmouth Branch of <br />prekented the,following resolution and distributing copies to Council; <br /> <br /> "WHEREAS, Martin Luther King, Jr., was a man of peace and an advocate of nonviolence; <br />and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Martin Luther King, Jr., was instrumental in furthering positive race relations <br />during a time when social action threatened to divide our nation':s people; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Martin Luther King, Jr., was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize as a result of his <br />uniting efforts to make the true meaning of peace be realized by all mankind; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, The city of Portsmouth is being designated on Ail America City has displayed a <br />faithful and enduring committment to social and econom'ic progress for this community at large;I <br />and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the memory of the life of Martin Luther King, Jr., his pursuit of peace and <br />harmonious relations between the races should be commemorated officially in the City of <br />Portsmouth; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Martin Luther King, Jr., was born on January fifteen, ninteen hundred twenty-nih <br />and was tragically slain by an assassin's bullet on April four, nineteen hundred siXty-eight; <br />now, therefore, be it <br /> <br /> RESOLVED by the City Council in the City of Portsmouth, State of Virginia, that January <br />fifteen of each year, the date of the birth of Martin Luther King, Jr., be designated as an <br />official Holiday in the City of Portsmouth." <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Elliott and seconded by Mr. Holley, that January 15, 1977 be called <br />"Martin Luther King Day", and was adopted by unanimous vote. <br /> <br /> Councilman E. Saunders Early, Jr. entered the Council Chamber at 9:03 p.m. prior to the <br />adjournment. <br /> <br />On motion meeting adjourned at 9:15 p.m. <br /> <br />APPROVED - <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
