R -20 -33 <br />A RESOLUTION TO RENAME MT. HERMON PARK AS BERNARD D. GRIFFIN SR. <br />PARK. <br />WHEREAS, Bernard D. Griffin Sr. was born and raised in Portsmouth, Virginia, was a <br />proud graduate of I.C. Norcom High School, and was a lifetime member of New First Baptist <br />Church Taylorsville in Portsmouth; and <br />WHEREAS, Mr. Griffin was extremely active in the Portsmouth community, and a <br />member of the Portsmouth Branch of the NAACP, American Legion Post 190, the I.C. Norcom <br />Alumni Association, the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament Committee Executive Board, and <br />many other civic organizations; and <br />WHEREAS, Mr. Griffin served as chairman of the Portsmouth School Board and as <br />Vice Mayor and Mayor of the City of Portsmouth; and <br />WHEREAS, Mr. Griffin was admired as a wise and reasonable voice on City Council <br />and in civic affairs; and <br />WHEREAS, in appreciation for Mr. Griffin's lifetime of service to Portsmouth, the City <br />Council desires to rename Mt. Hermon Park in his honor and memory; <br />NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia that the name of Mt. Hermon Park located at 901 Florida Avenue is hereby officially <br />changed to Bernard D. Griffin Sr. Park. <br />ADOPTED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia at an electronic meeting <br />held on November 10, 2020. <br />Teste: <br />City Clerk <br />
