to time for any purpose and the investigation of the cause, origin and circumstances <br />of fires. <br />(c) The fire marshal and the deputy and assistant fire marshals shall have the authority <br />to arrest, to procure and serve warrants of arre t and to issue summons in the <br />manner authorized by general law, for violation of fire prevention and fire safety <br />laws and ordinances The authority granted in this subsection (c) shall not be <br />exercised by the fire marshal or any deputy or assistant until such person has <br />satisfactorily completed a training course for fire marshals and their assistants which <br />course shall be approved by the Virginia Fire Services Board <br />(dl The fire marshal and his designated deputies and assistants shall have the same <br />powers as a sheriffi police officer, or law enforcement officer. The fire marshal or <br />his designees shall investigate alleged offenses pursuant to Title 27 of the Code of <br />Virginia, as amended, and this chapter. The police powers granted in this section <br />shall not be exercised by the fire marshal or any deputy or assistant until such person <br />has satisfactorily completed a training course for fire marshals with police powers <br />approved by the Virginia Fire Services Board In addition such person with police <br />powers shall continue to exercise those police Rowers only upon participation in and <br />satisfactory completion of such in- service and advanced courses as shall be required <br />and approved by the Virginia Fire Services Board <br />(e) The fire marshal and his deputies and assistantsin shall have such other <br />powers and perform such other duties incident to his office as are set forth in this <br />division or the ordinances of the city or as may be conferred or imposed upon him <br />from time to time by law. <br />3. That this ordinance shall take effect on the date of its adoption. <br />ADOPTED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia at a meeting held <br />on March 28, 2017. <br />Teste: <br />City Clerk <br />
