of the owner, or other site as may be approved by the local health department, for <br />a period of 90 days. <br />(c) If the owner or person having custody of such animal shall be unwilling or unable <br />to subject any animal to the quarantine required by the director of public health, <br />or if, in the opinion of the director of public health, such is necessary, it shall be <br />the duty of the director of public health to cause such animal to be impounded at <br />the facility of the Portsmouth Humane Society, Inc. or other entity serving as the <br />city's public animal shelter for the quarantine period required, and the owner or <br />custodian of such animal shall pay the sum as set forth in appendix A to this Code <br />for each day or part thereof the animal is so quarantined. <br />10. That subsections (b)-(c) of Section 4-99 the Code of the City of <br />Portsmouth, Virginia (2006) is hereby amended as follows: <br />Sec. 4-99. -Confinement of animal which has bitten person or another animal. <br />(b) When any potentially rabid animal, other than a dog or cat, exposes or may have <br />exposed a person to rabies through a bite, or through saliva or central nervous <br />system tissue, in a fresh open wound or mucous membrane, that animal shall be <br />confined at the discretion of the director of public health in a manner approved by <br />the health department or humanely euthanized as provided in Code of Virginia, <br />§3.2-6546 and its head sent to the division of consolidated laboratory services of <br />the department of general services or the local health department for evaluation. <br />(c) When any animal, other than a dog or cat, is exposed to rabies through a bite, or <br />through saliva or central nervous system tissue, in a fresh open wound or mucous <br />membrane, by an animal believed to be afflicted with rabies, that newly exposed <br />animal shall be confined at the discretion of the director of public health in a <br />manner approved by the health department or humanely euthanized as provided in <br />Code of Virginia, §3.2-6546. <br />11.
