R-10-07 A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA OPPOSING THE CLOSING OF THE CRADOCK STATION BY THE UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE. WHEREAS, the United States Postal Service is currently considering a number of cost cutting measures to offset a continuing trend of declining revenues; and WHEREAS, among the measures being considered is the closing of a number of postal facilities in the Richmond District, including the Cradock Station in the City of Portsmouth; and WHEREAS, the Cradock neighborhood, a designated historic district, was originally designed as a planned, self-sufficient development, with a commercial center and other amenities necessary for a viable community; and WHEREAS, the Cradock Station has for years served the purpose of providing convenient postal services for the Cradock residents, particularly the community's senior citizens and those with limited mobility; and WHEREAS, the proposed closure of this longstanding neighborhood facility will impose a significant hardship on Cradock residents who will be required to travel a great distance to obtain the postal services now provided locally in a convenient location. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia that it hereby expresses its strong opposition to the closing of the Cradock Station in the historic Cradock section of the City of Portsmouth. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to Postmaster Robert Shaw at the Portsmouth Main Post Office for inclusion in the documents to be considered prior to a final decision on the proposed closing. FINALL Y, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Manager is directed to take such additional steps as he deems appropriate in this matter.
