<br />R-09-35 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF CONDOLENCE TO THE FAMILY OF SPECIALIST SHAWN <br />DANTE SYKES FROM THE GRATEFUL CITIZENS OF THE CITY OF <br />PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, on the th day of May, 2009, death brought to a close the very young and <br />active life of Specialist Shawn Dante Sykes, a soldier in the United States Army; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Specialist Shawn Dante Sykes served the citizens ofthe City of Portsmouth <br />and this Nation with determination, dedication and distinction and received numerous medals <br />including the Army Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, <br />National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal and Expert Marksmanship Badge; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, he gave unselfishly of his youth, strength, courage and ultimately of his life <br />in the interest of democracy and freedom for the citizens of this City as well as the Nation; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the stature he attained in the community by his exemplary life and many <br />achievements was well recognized during his lifetime by his family, friends employers and <br />associates; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, SPC Sykes will continue to be remembered by many and loved by his <br />mother who referred to him as an anchor of the family, her best friend, and everything she could <br />have wanted in a son; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the community has suffered a great loss in the very premature passing of <br />Specialist Shawn Dante Sykes and joins with his family, friends and associates in mourning his <br />death. <br /> <br />NOW,THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia, that the sympathy of this body, acting for the citizens of this City, who are grateful for <br />his service to his country, city, and community, be and hereby is extended to the family of the <br />late Specialist Shawn Dante Sykes. <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be spread upon the minutes of the <br />Council, and that a copy thereof be presented to his family in recognition of his service and <br />respected statue in this community. <br /> <br />ADOPTED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, at a meeting held June <br />23, 2009. <br /> <br />Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br />
