If a sign being constructed for the City of Portsmouth <br />is sponsored by another entity, then sponsorship information on the sign shall not be computed as <br />part of the allowable advertising display area, provided that the sponsorship information <br />constitutes less than 25 percent of the advertising display area. Otherwise such sponsorship <br />information must conform to the requirements of this Article. <br /> <br />(b) Height. The height ofa sign shall be measured from the top edge of the sign to <br />the ground level measured at the edge of the pavement of the public street on which the sign <br />faces. <br /> <br />(c) Maximum display area: OjJpremises signs. The maximum advertising display <br />area shall be 672 square feet in Industrial M-I, M-I-R and M-2 zoning districts and 300 square <br />feet in Commercial C-2 zoning districts, <br /> <br />(d) Maximum display area: On-premises signs, <br /> <br />(i) The maximum advertising display area for on-premises signs located on any <br />property zoned Office Residential OR, Residential RM, Residential RT, or <br />Residential RMH or in any Historic zoning district shall be 18 square feet per <br />sign face, <br /> <br />(ii) The maximum advertising display area in the Commercial C-I and C-2, <br />Industrial M-I, M-I-R, and M-2, Waterfront W-I, Commerce Park CP zoning <br />districts and in the Office, Commercial, Central Business, Industrial, Mixed Use, <br />and Public zoning subdistricts of the Downtown D-I and D-2 zoning districts <br />shall be the larger of the following: <br /> <br />a. One square foot per linear foot of street footage of the zone lot; <br />provided, that no individual on-premises sign may exceed 125 square <br />feet per sign face; or <br /> <br />b, Ten percent of the area (square footage) of the front building facade, <br />not to exceed 40 square feet per sign face, for on-premises signs located <br />on zone lots with street frontages of 40 feet or less, <br /> <br />Sec. 40-65.4. Nonconforming signs. <br /> <br />The following additional requirements shall apply to signs which were legally erected <br />prior to October II, 1983, but which do not conform to provisions of this article: <br /> <br />(a) Any nonconforming on-premises sign shall be removed or brought into conformance <br />with this chapter if for any period of 90 days it does not advertise a business or service located on <br />the same zone lot with the sign; <br /> <br />(b) Any nonconforming off-premises sign shall be removed or brought into <br />conformance with this chapter if for any period of 60 days it does not contain copy or messages <br />on the advertising display area; <br /> <br />( c) If a nonconforming sign is destroyed by natural causes, it may not thereafter be <br />repaired, reconstructed or replaced except in conformity with all the provisions of this chapter <br />and the remnants of the former sign structure shall be cleared from the land, For purposes of this <br />
