R-02-36 A RESOLUTION APPROVING AND ADOPTING MISSION STATEMENTS FOR THE PORTSMOUTH MUSEUMS AND FOR THE CHILDREN'S MUSEUM OF VIRGINIA, THE COURTHOUSE GALLERIES. THE PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD MUSEUM, AND THE LIGHTSHIP MUSEUM. WHEREAS, all museums seeking accreditation are required to adopt a formally stated mission statement; and WHEREAS, a museum's mission statement should describe the museum's purpose and its reason for existence; and WHEREAS, a museum's mission statement should also define the museum's unique identity, provide a distinct focus for the institution, and articulate the museum's understanding of its role and responsibility to the public and its collections; and WHEREAS, the Portsmouth Museum and Fine Arts Commission has developed a proposed general mission statement for the Portsmouth Museums and individual mission statements for the Children's Museum of Virginia, the Courthouse Galleries, the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum, and the Lightship Museum. WHEREAS, the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, has reviewed the proposed mission statements and desires to adopt them as a formal statement of the purpose and goals of each institution. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, that it hereby adopts the mission statements for the Portsmouth Museums, the Children's Museum of Virginia, the Courthouse Galleries, the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum, and the Lightship Museum, set out in a document titled "Proposed Mission Statements for Museums attached hereto and made a part hereof. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk be, and she hereby is, directed to send a copy of this resolution to the Chairperson of the Portsmouth Museums and Fine Arts Commission. ADOPTED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, at a meeting held on June 11,2002. Teste: City Clerk
