AN ORDINANCE PROVIDING FOR THE CLASSIFICATION OF EMPLOYMENT AND <br />A COMPENSATION PLAN FOR FIREMEN AND POLICEMEN OF THE CITY. <br /> <br />Be it Ordained By the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, that <br /> <br />Section 1. Employees Classified. <br /> <br /> Om and after July 1, 1958, all Firemen and Policemen of the <br />City of Portsmouth shall be classified accerding to their rank and their compensa- <br />tion shall be fixed accordin~ to such rank held. <br /> <br />Section 2. Rates of Compensation. <br /> <br /> The basic salary or compensation of each Fireman and Policeman <br />until otherwise changed by Ordinance shall be according To the schedule of pay <br />hereinafter set forth designated as Schedule A and made a part of this Ordinance <br />except that man in the Police Department required to wear civilian clothes will <br />he allowed an additional twenty dollars ($20.00) per month as a clothing altov~ance. <br /> <br />Section 3. Application to Present Firemen and Policemen. <br /> <br /> All Firemen and Policemen of the City shall receive the same <br />compensation according to their classification as set forth in Schedule A of this <br />Ordi~-ce. Any Firem~n er Policeman of the City who is az the effective date of <br />this Ordinance receiving less than the amount provided for in the schedule for <br />his class of employment shall on and after July 1, 1958 receive the amount set <br />forth in the schedule. Any Fireman or Policeman who is receiving on the effective <br />date of this Ordinance, more than the amotLn~ he would be entitled to receive under <br />said schedule shall continue at the same salary tbntil his years of service shall <br />entitle him to an increase in compensation. <br /> <br />Section 4. New Employees. <br /> <br /> Any person hereafter employed by the City shall receive com- <br />pensation during the first, second, third and fourth years of his emplo?ment as <br />set forth in Schedule A of this O~dinance~ No employee shall receive compensation <br />provided for in the tenth year until completion of ten full years of service. <br /> <br />Section 5. Promotions. <br /> <br /> For the purpose of computing compensation under Schedule A <br />of this Ordinance during the first year only of employment in any higher rank, <br />any fireman or policeman promoted to a higher rank during the second, third or <br />fourth year of his employment shall be deemed to be in the first, secon8 or third <br />year, respectively, of his employment~ and any fireman or policeman promoted to <br />a higher rank during or after the fifth year of his employment shall be deemed <br />to be in the fourth year of his employmenT. <br /> <br />Section $~ Demotions. <br /> <br /> Any Fireman or Policeman who is demoted to a lower class shall <br />receive compensation according ~o the rank in which he is placed. <br /> <br /> <br />
