AN ORDINANCE TO A~fD SECTION 8-57 OF THE CODE C~ T~E CIT~ OF <br /> PORTSMOUT}t, VIRGINIA, 1951, AS At~ENDED, PERTAINING TO EXE~PTIONS <br /> FROM PAYMENT OF THE TAX ON UTILITY SERVICES, TO PROVIDE TF~T CER- <br /> TAIN LO~N RENT PUBLIC HOUSING PROJECTS ARE NOT EXE~PT. <br /> <br /> Be it ordained by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia: <br /> <br /> Section 1: That Section 8-57 of the Code of the City of Portsmouth, Vir- <br />ginia, 1951, as amended, be amended and reordained to read as follows: <br /> <br /> Section 8-57. Exemptions as to federal, state and local governments, <br /> <br /> The United States of America, the State of Virginia, its political sub- <br />divisions, and the boards, co~missions and authorities thereof, are hereby <br />exempted from the payment of the tax imposed and levied by this article with <br />respect To the purchase of utility services used by such gover~tal agencies, <br />except where any such governmental agency is engaged in an operation for pro- <br />fit. This exemption does not apply To a governmental agency e~aged in low <br />ren~ Dublic housing, where costs of utility services are Daid either in whole <br />or in part by the tenant. <br /> <br /> Section 2: This ordinance being necessary for the preservation of the <br />public health, morals and safety, an emergency is declared to exist and it shall <br />take effect from its passage. <br /> <br /> Adopted By the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, at a meeting <br />held on June ~0, 1960. <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
